AI is not artificial intelligence. It is augmented intelligence

While the term "AI" traditionally stands for "Artificial Intelligence," the concept of "Augmented Intelligence" has been gaining traction in recent years.

The notion of Augmented Intelligence emphasizes the collaboration between humans and AI systems, where AI is seen as a tool that enhances and complements human capabilities rather than replacing them. In this view, AI systems serve as cognitive assistants, helping humans make better decisions and perform tasks more effectively.

There are several reasons why some experts prefer the term "Augmented Intelligence":

  1. Collaboration and Assistance: AI technologies are increasingly designed to work alongside humans, providing support and assistance rather than operating independently. This collaboration leads to better decision-making and problem-solving.

  1. Human Oversight and Control: Augmented Intelligence emphasizes the importance of human oversight and control, ensuring that AI systems remain ethical, accountable, and transparent.
  2. Enhancing Human Capabilities: AI can help humans perform tasks faster and more accurately, freeing up time for more creative and strategic work. This augments human intelligence rather than replacing it.
  3. Reducing Fear and Misconceptions: Reframing AI as Augmented Intelligence can help alleviate fears and misconceptions about AI, such as the notion that AI will replace human jobs or lead to a dystopian future.

While "Artificial Intelligence" remains the most commonly used term, "Augmented Intelligence" offers an alternative perspective emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between humans and AI systems. Both viewpoints contribute to the ongoing conversation about the role and impact of AI in society.

I completely agree with your assessment of Augmented Intelligence as a crucial evolution in our understanding of AI. By framing AI as a collaborator that enhances rather than replaces human capabilities, we shift the focus toward a more symbiotic relationship between humans and technology. This not only boosts productivity but also fosters trust in AI systems, as human oversight remains central to decision-making. One important consideration is how Augmented Intelligence can bridge the gap between specialized knowledge and broader access to insights. For instance, in fields like healthcare and finance, AI can process vast datasets to provide recommendations, while the final decision is made by human experts who bring context and empathy into the equation. This creates a balance where AI amplifies human expertise without supplanting it. Moreover, by maintaining human control over AI outputs, we directly address ethical concerns such as accountability and transparency. When humans retain authority over key decisions, it mitigates fears around job displacement and safeguards against biased or unethical AI applications.
