AI in Architectural Visualization

AI in Architectural Visualization

In the fast-paced world of architectural design and visualization, staying on the cutting edge of technology is essential, and we’ve been following the changes for 25 years. One of the most talked-about tools in the industry right now is artificial intelligence (AI). Though it once sounded futuristic, AI is already here, and we’re seeing new tools and techniques emerge daily. At J. Scott Smith Visual Designs, Inc., we’re regularly testing these advancements to explore how they can enhance our workflow and benefit our clients.

AI as an Assistant, Not a Replacement

The idea of AI creating full architectural renderings at the click of a button may sound tempting, but we’re still a long way from that reality. AI can’t yet understand the intricacies of client requirements, the subtleties of design intent, or the unique characteristics of a specific site. In our work, AI is best understood as a powerful assistant—one that amplifies our creative capabilities but doesn’t replace the artistry, planning, and expertise required to bring a project to life.

How AI is Enhancing Our Workflow

Our approach to AI is cautious but enthusiastic. We’re monitoring new developments as they emerge and rigorously testing tools to see how they might integrate into our workflow. In some cases, AI can speed up the production of conceptual visuals, generate ideas during the early design stages, or enhance specific textures and lighting effects. For example, AI can help us quickly explore multiple variations of a material or color scheme, providing inspiration and options without having to recreate every detail from scratch.

Creating Client Images with AI Tools

We’re already incorporating AI-generated imagery into select projects. With carefully directed input, AI tools can create preliminary visualizations that help communicate the broad strokes of a concept. This can be particularly useful for quickly testing ideas or building initial mood boards. When combined with our traditional modeling and rendering techniques, these AI-assisted images can add richness to early-stage presentations, allowing us to show clients multiple directions and gather feedback efficiently.

In some cases, we can even start with very preliminary design materials from a client, such as a modest SketchUp model or elevation sketch, and turn it into conceptual visuals that would be suitable for a mood board. Not a final photorealistic rendering, but a great test of materials and design concept.

Staying at the Forefront of Technology

While AI won’t be replacing human designers anytime soon, we believe in staying at the forefront of these technological advancements. By continually experimenting with and refining our use of AI, we’re ensuring that our clients receive the highest-quality visuals, created with the most effective tools available. For us, AI is a way to make our work more flexible, responsive, and efficient—always with a focus on delivering the best results for our clients.
