Passwords are a crucial component of online security, but people frequently struggle to create secure and memorable ones. This results in the use of passwords that are readily compromised by hackers. To address this issue, researchers have devised PassGAN, a machine-learning model that generates strong passwords.

PassGAN is a generative adversarial network (GAN) that generates passwords by learning patterns from a training dataset. It includes two neural networks: a generator and a discriminator. The password generator generates new passwords, while the password discriminator determines whether a password is authentic or not.

PassGAN requires a dataset of authentic credentials for training. Using genuine passwords, however, poses a security risk. Consequently, researchers utilised a publicly accessible dataset of password breaches called RockYou, which contains over 32 million passwords that were compromised in a data breach in 2009. The researchers preprocessed the data by eliminating duplicates, frequently used passwords, and passwords with less than eight characters. Additionally, they included fabricated passwords in the dataset to enhance password diversity.

Training and testing sets were created after preprocessing. The training set trained the PassGAN model, whereas the testing set evaluated it. PassGAN has generator and discriminator networks. The generator network generates a password from a random noise vector, while the discriminator network determines its authenticity.

The generator creates passwords that resemble those in the training dataset while the discriminator examines its output and provides input on how to improve. The generator generates indistinguishable passwords until it can.

PassGAN was evaluated by comparing generated passwords to testing dataset passwords. PassGAN generated stronger passwords than the testing dataset.

What kind of passwords are 'safe' from AI

According to a study by Home Security Heroes, artificial intelligence can break nearly 51 percent of all common passwords in less than one minute. In addition, 65% of prevalent passwords were broken in less than an hour, while 81% of passwords were broken in less than a month.

The study found that passwords with more than 18 characters are often resistant to AI password crackers because it takes PassGAN at least 10 months to break passwords with only numbers. According to the study, passwords including symbols, numbers, lower-case letters, and upper-case letters might take 6 quintillion years to decipher.

The security research company claims that digit-only passwords are the simplest to break. Even a 10-character password made up exclusively of numbers can very immediately be cracked.

The paper stated that whereas a ten-letter mixed-case password would take four weeks to crack, one with exclusively lowercase letters would take an hour. It might take five years to understand a ten-character strong password made up of letters, symbols, and numbers.

The business additionally provided a list of elements that guarantee your password strength is difficult to compromise:

  • Use at least 15 characters.
  • Have at least two letters (upper and lower-case), numbers, and symbols in the password.
  • Avoid obvious password patterns, even if they have all the required character lengths and types.
