Imagine a workplace where tasks that once took hours are completed in minutes, customer inquiries are resolved before a representative even picks up the phone, and decisions are informed by real-time, data-driven insights. Sounds futuristic, right? Well, the future is here—and it's powered by Agentic AI.
I’m thrilled to talk about this transformative technology that’s reshaping how we work and live. But let me break it down for you—because AI agents aren’t just a buzzword; they’re already driving tangible change across industries in both the Western world and Africa.
What is Agentic AI?
In simple terms, Agentic AI refers to artificial intelligence systems designed to act autonomously, making decisions and executing tasks without constant human oversight. Unlike traditional AI tools, which often require human intervention, AI agents operate with a level of "agency," dynamically adapting to new information and environments.
Think of them as your digital coworkers—only faster, more consistent, and tireless.
Transforming the Western Workplace
Let’s start with an example you may have heard of: AutoGPT and ChatGPT-based AI agents in the West. These tools are helping companies streamline everything from customer support to software development.
For instance, consider how GitHub Copilot assists software engineers by suggesting code in real time, dramatically reducing the time it takes to build applications. Developers can focus on complex problem-solving while the AI handles routine coding tasks.
Another example is Replika AI, a conversational AI that provides mental health support for employees. Companies in the U.S. are using tools like this to ensure their workforce remains productive and engaged.
But it doesn’t stop there. Retail giants like Walmart are using AI agents in inventory management. Their autonomous systems predict demand, restock shelves, and even optimize supply chains without human intervention.
Agentic AI in Africa
Now, let’s bring this closer to home. In Africa, AI agents are driving workplace automation in unique and innovative ways that address the continent's specific challenges.
While the examples I share here are not the typical Agentic AI that are emerging now, because many of them still have human intervention, they are the closest examples I could find of how AI is being used to automate work in Africa.
Take Flutterwave, a Nigerian fintech company. Their AI systems are automating fraud detection, enabling secure and seamless cross-border payments. This kind of automation ensures compliance and reduces financial losses, giving businesses the confidence to expand operations.

In Kenya, Twiga Foods has adopted AI-powered solutions to optimize supply chain logistics in agriculture. Their AI agents predict crop yields, plan delivery routes, and manage inventory for small-scale farmers, making food distribution efficient and reducing wastage.
And let’s not forget the role of conversational AI in customer service. Companies like MTN and Safaricom are deploying AI agents to handle thousands of customer queries daily, allowing human representatives to focus on complex issues.
How Agentic AI is Transforming the Workplace
Challenges and Ethical Considerations
Of course, adopting AI agents comes with challenges. There’s the fear of job displacement, concerns over data privacy, and the need for upskilling the workforce. I believe that as leaders, it’s our responsibility to address these issues head-on.
For instance, retraining programs are essential to ensure employees transition into roles that complement AI. Governments and organizations in Africa and the West alike must adopt policies that safeguard workers while embracing innovation.
The Future is Collaborative
AI agents are not here to replace us—they’re here to work with us. Just as the industrial revolution amplified human capabilities, Agentic AI is augmenting our ability to achieve more in less time.
The future of work isn’t humans versus AI; it’s humans and AI working together. And as we embrace these tools, businesses—whether in Silicon Valley or Nairobi—will unlock new levels of productivity, innovation, and growth.
So, what are you waiting for? It’s time to explore how Agentic AI can transform your workplace. After all, the future belongs to those who adapt. Are you ready to join the revolution?
