Google's Gemma open models

Google has unveiled Gemma, a new family of open-source AI models, providing a lightweight, advanced alternative for developers and researchers.

Built upon Google's flagship Gemini technology, Gemma models come in two sizes and are designed for easy use across various platforms, including laptops, IoT devices, and cloud services.

These models are optimized for NVIDIA GPUs and Google Cloud TPUs, and are accompanied by a Responsible Generative AI Toolkit to promote safe development practices.

Accessible through platforms like Kaggle and Hugging Face, Google aims to democratize AI technology while ensuring responsible use.

This initiative represents a strategic shift towards open-source AI, reflecting Google's commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration in the AI community.

Nvidia posts record revenue

Nvidia has reported a record-breaking quarterly revenue of $22.1 billion, a 265% increase year-over-year, driven by robust sales in its AI business, particularly the Hopper H100 chips.

The company's net income surged to $12.29 billion, up 769% from last year. The Data Center business, now the largest revenue source, grew by 409% to $18.40 billion.

Despite export restrictions to China, Nvidia continued strong sales, especially to cloud providers.

The company anticipates continued growth, projecting $24.0 billion in revenue for Q1 fiscal 2025.

This financial success highlights Nvidia's leading role in the AI and semiconductor industries.

Neuralink patient controls mouse

Elon Musk has revealed that a patient with Neuralink's brain chip implant can now control a computer mouse using their thoughts, marking a significant breakthrough for the company.

Implanted in January, the patient has fully recovered without any adverse effects.

This technology aims to assist individuals with severe injuries or conditions like quadriplegia and ALS in operating computers through thought.

Neuralink's ultimate goal extends to enabling people with paralysis to control digital devices and restoring vision, motor functions, and speech through brain-computer interfaces, pending regulatory approval and safety validations.

Gemini stops generating people

Google has paused the feature in its Gemini AI that generates images of people due to concerns over inaccuracies and biases, particularly in historical contexts.

Criticism arose when Gemini produced images that misrepresented historical scenarios, such as inaccurately including people of color in contexts where they historically wouldn't have been present.

This sparked debates over the AI's portrayal of diversity and its potential to perpetuate stereotypes.

Google aims to refine Gemini's algorithms to ensure more accurate and sensitive depictions across various races, genders, and historical periods.

The move underscores the broader challenge in AI to address bias and incorporate ethical considerations, highlighting the tech industry's responsibility towards balanced representation and innovation.
