More infrastructure, data centers, and the need to “fuel” them through nuclear energy - this is the key trend. Google highlighted it by partnering with a startup to build small nuclear reactors to power AI, while the UK is exploring the possibility of adding an ultra-high-voltage grid of up to 800 kilovolts, double the current capacity, to meet the growing demands of innovative sectors.
?
Amidst this, an intriguing trend is emerging: the corporate adoption of ChatGPT-like systems in regulatory and consulting sectors. The European Commission is launching its own tool similar to ChatGPT, while Bain & Co. and OpenAI are expanding their partnership to provide AI tools to BIG4 sector clients.
?
Another trend - the dark side of AI: the rise of cybercriminal activity and legal battles against AI providers over copyright violations.

A round-up of the key developments.

Commission rolls out its own ChatGPT-like tool
The new content generator, called GPT@EC, could help Commission staff with drafting policy documents. The Commission’s IT department, DG DIGIT, has rolled out an AI pilot project to assist staff in drafting policy documents. While the Commission has been a global front-runner in regulating AI models underpinning tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, it also wants to use AI’s benefits in the European Union executive daily proceedings.

Masquerading malware: FBI shines light on new AI-assisted scam duping victims out of thousands
?
The FBI has issued a scam alert involving sophisticated artificial intelligence and "masquerading malware," warning that people have lost thousands of dollars to these deceptive schemes. Austin Ennis, an individual who considers himself to be very tech-savvy and familiar with computers, the web, and cryptocurrency, fell victim to one of those scams. He encountered a phony Elon Musk video on what appeared to be a legitimate YouTube stream that prompted viewers to participate in a cryptocurrency giveaway. Austin scanned a QR code shown on the video that directed him to what appeared to be a well-polished ".org" website, where he subsequently sent $4,000, and later realized he had been duped.

Google signs deal with startup to build small nuclear reactors to power AI
Google has signed a landmark deal to use electricity produced by small nuclear reactors to power its artificial intelligence (AI) efforts. Under the agreement with startup Kairos Power announced on Monday, the California-based tech giant will back the construction of seven small nuclear reactors capable of generating 500 megawatts of power. The first reactor is scheduled to come online by 2030, with others to follow in the coming years.

Bain & Co said it will expand its partnership with OpenAI to sell the AI startup's tools, including ChatGPT, to the consultancy's clients. AI will suck up 500% more power in UK in 10 Years, grid CEO says
In Britain, National Grid is studying adding an ultra-high-voltage network of as much as 800 kilovolts, double the current capacity. The new grid would enable bulk power transfers around the country, linking up big energy sources and demand centers, Pettigrew said. That would mean a shift from the current sprawling network of individual connection projects — all requiring their own approval and infrastructure — to major capacity hubs. The proposal is on top of previously announced plans for about £112 billion ($142 billion) of grid investments to ensure the country is on track for net zero. The project will support the growing energy demand from such sectors as AI.

Celebrities unite against AI’s unlicensed use of their work
Thousands of creators within the music and film business are urging governments to regulate how artificial intelligence (AI) companies use copyrighted material to train their systems. This call comes as artists voice growing concerns over the exploitation of their work without permission. ABBA’s Bj?rn Ulvaeus, Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, and actress Julianne Moore are some of the stars who have opposed the use of AI in relation to their work. More than 11,500 artists, authors, and musicians have signed a statement condemning the use of unlicensed creative works in AI training, describing it as “a major, unjust threat”.

Rupert Murdoch’s news outlets sue Perplexity AI for allegedly engaging in ‘massive freeriding’
Rupert Murdoch’s Dow Jones, the parent company of the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Post sued Perplexity on Monday, accusing the generative AI company of illegally scraping its reporting and diverting traffic to its own platforms. The News Corp-owned companies accused Perplexity of training its so-called answer machine with copyrighted material, using scraped human-created news content to generate responses to users’ questions, allowing them to circumvent the publishers’ websites. “What Perplexity does not tout is that its core business model involves engaging in massive freeriding on Plaintiffs’ protected content to compete against Plaintiffs for the engagement of the same news-consuming audience, and in turn to deprive Plaintiffs of critical revenue sources,” the complaint alleges.

Hackers Have Uploaded Thousands Of Malicious Files To AI’s Biggest Online Repository
Researchers from security startups ProtectAI, Hiddenlayer and Wiz have warned for months that hackers have uploaded “malicious models” to Hugging Face’s site, which now hosts more than a million models available for download. A scan of Hugging Face uncovered a number of fake accounts posing as companies like Facebook, Visa, SpaceX and Swedish telecoms giant Ericsson. One model, which falsely claimed to be from the genomics testing startup 23AndMe, had been downloaded thousands of times before it was spotted. Hugging Face has now integrated ProtectAI’s tool that scans for malicious code into its platform, showing users the results before they download anything.
