AHPRA Advertising guidelines: What should you know?

Guidelines for Advertising your Medical Practice

The National Board and AHPRA have guidelines for advertising regulated health services.

In particular, it is important for practices to know about:

- What is acceptable evidence & what evidence is acceptable for claims about the effectiveness of a regulated health service?

- Testimonials, protected titles, claims about qualifications and more.

There are serious consequences for non-compliance, which is why it is crucial for you as a GP or Practice Manager to know about?the Revised AHPRA Advertising Guidelines.

As a start, here are three important considerations:

  1. Defining acceptable evidence levels:?To advertise medical treatments fairly, you must only rely on relevant and thoroughly researched information. However, the good and the bad sides of a proposed treatment can of course be discussed with your patient.
  2. Supporting claims:?AHPRA and the National Board have developed a framework for evaluating whether your advertising claims are supported by adequate evidence. The quality of such evidence will be evaluated by the source, relevance, quality of research and more.
  3. Testimonials and Reviews:?Advertisers cannot use testimonials in their advertising that refer to clinical aspects of regulated health services. You also cannot be held accountable for reviews on third-party sites, so long as you do not repost them or reply to them. AHPRA intends to focus on testimonials that pose a greater risk.
