Based on inputs by Dr Shafiq Ahmed - Director - Urology, Robotic Urology, Uro-Oncology, Andrology & Robotic Renal Transplant at BLK-MAX Super Speciality Hospital
Ahmed, a 7-year-old child from Iraq is yet another case of neglected PUV (posterior urethral valve). He came to us for treatment this year at the BLK Max in Delhi.? In children, PUV is a small membrane in urethra - which leads to bladder and kidney damage if not treated at birth. These children at a later age need augmentation + mitrofinoff to protect kidneys. Some children progress to ESRD and need kidney transplant also.? Ahmed underwent a successful bladder augmentation + mitrofinoff procedure.
Posterior Urethral Valve
Posterior urethral valves (PUV) are obstructive membranes which develop in the urethra (tube which drains urine from the bladder). When PUV obstructs the outflow of urine through the urethra. the bladder, ureters and kidneys become progressively dilated, which may lead to damage. Severity of the blockage depends on the degree of the urine blockage.
PUV can develop in the early stages of fetal development affecting only male infants and occurs in extremely rare cases.
Signs and symptoms
PUV can be identified before any symptoms begins to show through imaging. If dilation (hydronephrosis) is noticed, then the baby may be monitored throughout the pregnancy and after birth. Children who are not diagnosed in time may show several symptoms. These include

1.?????? Urinary tract infection
2.?????? Difficulty with urination and weak urination
3.?????? Frequency of urination may increase or urinary incontinence or difficulty in holding urine may begin to happen
Surgical treatment
Treatment for PUV depends on the severity of each case, child’s age, bladder and kidney status. The surgical goal is to preserve kidney and bladder function.
Ahmed was lucky and has recovered. Please bless him with a healthy and happy life
