Agriculture: Are You Ready for More Scrutiny of Applied Crop Nutrients?

Agriculture: Are You Ready for More Scrutiny of Applied Crop Nutrients?

Only about 1/3 of applied nutrients are absorbed and utilized by our crops. Which means we've historically over-applied fertility.

Companies selling fertility were fine with this, university recommendations supported this, and farmers made the applications because it produced yield.

Only problem: the environment. Particularly the watershed and the aquifer.

My hiking comments, fresh off my presentation about nutrient reduction. I foresee a (very near) future where participation in USDA programs comes with a stringent nutrient management plan. Forward thinking producers will get ahead of this, while the "you ain't gonna tell me how to farm" producers will be regulated or fined out of business.

Talking Nutrient Management in Nebraska

Last week I shared the stage with Maryland farmer Temple Rhodes and Agrotech USA’s James Paterson. Our topic: Can farmers make more yield using less fertilizer?

As you might imagine there is plenty of interest (and several skeptics!) on this issue. Our panel addressed the question and provided promise for a future that requires more judicious fertility application. ?

It’s All About The Water

The magnifying glass is on Agriculture’s use of nitrates and phosphates. Why? Because the water. It began with the Chesapeake Bay, moved to Lake Erie a couple decades ago, and now the issue of contaminated water spans from Wisconsin to Iowa to Nebraska and beyond. ?

Trust me when I tell you, Agriculture: Applied nutrients and water quality are topics that will change how we farm. And it’s coming fast!
