Agriculture & Sustainability: Foods & Green alternatives

The garden of Eden in the Bible depicts a green World, envisages the true meaning of nature, just animals, trees, water bodies and well, two humans.? As the population grew the need for more food increased, more energy, more buildings and constructions, literally more everything. Now the need for more things almost meant the utilization of more agricultural products and resources. Agricultural products at this point had a dual role to play. For production of materials and as food. Over the years this has been the issue. As World population grows and increases, the need for more food increases. Hence the SDG goal 2 emphasizing on food for all, zero hunger, especially in the developing countries. With its main aim to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, key word “sustainable agriculture”. Hunger is the leading cause of death in the world. Our planet has provided us with tremendous resources, but unequal access and inefficient handling leaves millions of people malnourished. If we promote sustainable agriculture with modern technologies and fair distribution systems, we can sustain the whole world’s population and make sure that nobody will ever suffer from hunger again.

Our planet has provided us with tremendous resources, but unequal access and inefficient handling leaves millions of people malnourished. If we promote sustainable agriculture with modern technologies and fair distribution systems, we can sustain the whole world’s population and make sure that nobody will ever suffer from hunger again, according to the Global goals.

As countries transition into green alternatives and look to reduce carbon emissions and footprint green alternatives are being looked into. Brazil for instance is known to be at the forefront for a large quantity of the World’s biofuel. What do they use in the production of biofuels? Yes, you guessed right. They use biomass. These biomass are agricultural products apparently. Ranging from corn to sugarcane to other plants capable of producing ethanol and other precursors. Now imagine, these crops were meant to solve the problem of food scarcity but then again a large chunk goes to solving the problem of carbon emissions and projection of green alternatives.

On the other hand animals are going extinct due to loss of biodiversity. Aquatic animals are being killed on a daily basis as a result of pollution, this is a common feature in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria in West Africa. And as we all know fishes are high level proteins.?

The big question, how do we create a balance between food security and green alternatives in the agricultural sector?

Biotechnology could be a solution. Biotechnology is an advanced, yet developed, technology that develops or modifies a product for some applied purpose utilizing living organisms and/or? substances from these. So, biotechnology has become a major feature of modern industry, agriculture and medicine. Although like every other thing, it has its implications but the merits seem to be more. Examples of them include, disease free plants, fortification of crops, reproduction in aquaculture, pest resistant crops, drought resistant crops, fermentation, enzymes and many more.

A safe and sufficient food supply, grown in an environmentally responsible fashion, is essential for humanity. As biotechnology continues to evolve, factual and open public discourse is vital to define the role it should play in the society?
