Agnipath Scheme: Uncertainty or Promising Prospects?
Military forces exist in almost every country on the planet. However, the procedures employed to fill those armed services' ranks differ from country to country. Military service is necessary in some countries, while it is voluntary in others.
Military service in South Korea is mandatory for all able-bodied individuals, and refusal to serve can result in jail time. In India, on the other hand, there is no such requirement and it is a purely optional service.
India recently launched the AGNIPATH Scheme for young people aged 17.5 to 21 years (now raised to 23 years). Agniveers will be the name given to those who are accepted into this program. Once registered in the Indian Air Force, these Agniveers will be supervised for four years by the Air Force Act 1950. Agniveers would be a separate rank in the IAF from any other existing rank.
Each 'Agniveer' will be asked to explicitly accept the terms and conditions of the AGNIPATH Scheme as part of the enrolling procedure. In accordance with existing laws, parents/guardians must sign the enrolment form for personnel under the age of 18 years.
All Agniveers will return to society after a four-year term. Agniveers who have left the IAF will be given the opportunity to re-enlist in the regular cadre. Each Agniveer's skills will be documented in a certificate that will be included in his resume. These applications will be reviewed by a centralized board in a transparent way, with no more than 25% of the strength of the initial Agniveers batch being enrolled in the IAF based on performance over their four-year Agniveer engagement period.

This scheme opens new doors for candidates whose sole goal is to serve their country through the military and who have spent years preparing for the SSB, but the scheme's uncertainty, which allows only 25% of inductees to rejoin the service after their exit, raises concerns about the Agniveers' future.
Army jawans serve for an average of 15 to 17 years. Around 46,000 young people, ages 17.5 to 23, will be recruited for the program. However, under the current circumstances, it will result in the unemployment of 34,500 young people each year.
Another aspect that has alarmed many is that this strategy could jeopardize the lives of thousands of Agniveers, as being a fully-trained soldier takes 7-8 years. This plan will send the Agniveers who have been retained to dangerous regions for which they may not be prepared.
Because the scheme offers a substantial sum of Rs 11-12 lakh as a Seva Nidhi package to individuals who are demobilized after finishing their service, it can assist the country's youth who cannot afford an education. It will also assist the Agniveers in launching their second profession by providing appropriate bank loans, which will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
This scheme has sparked a lot of speculation. I believe that this is an excellent opportunity for Indian youngsters to learn discipline, develop their personalities, and increase their general perseverance. However, only after the first batch will it be apparent what practical options the Agniveers will have once they have exited after 4 years, and how much weight the government, colleges, and commercial organizations will place on this service.
