Yet another article in the news today about the aging sewer infrastructure in Vancouver with some sewers getting to 100 years of age. This is becoming an all too familiar story for most municipalities in Canada. Water and sewer systems are old or taxed to the limit.
In some cases the pace of development is overtaxing existing infrastructure to the point where development is being put off until new water supply and sewage treatment capacity can be made available. Unfortunately this can takes many years to implement and the costs are going through the roof, with the North Shore WWTP being a real time example.
It is getting to the point where decentralized solutions may be the best option going forward. Hydraloop makes world class greywater recycling systems that can reduce potable water use and sewage out put by up to 45% in new home construction. This is a big number which can allow for new development to take place while using the existing infrastructure. It is surprising that these systems are not being implemented immediately as the technology is proven and meets certifications.
