Aging is Inevitable; Getting old is Optional!

Aging is Inevitable; Getting old is Optional!

Aging brings on a lot of changes—some expected, some not so much. Many men of a certain age don’t truly understand how much strength training can help them stay strong, independent, and feeling their best.

Here's why strength training is a must for men over 40.

  1. The fact is that between the ages of 30 and 60, the average man loses 15 lbs of muscle. Why is muscle so important? First off, muscle is metabolically active tissue, and fat is not. Those are the only two things you can have on your bones.. Which would you rather have? More muscle or more fat? A pound of muscle can burn 30-50 calories per day. That means if you stop using your muscles, you will begin to lose them.

This is me in 2003. Age 42. I lived on a diet of bench presses and 1/4 mile sprint intervals for 12 weeks, training for the annual Pump & Run 5K

Without adding resistance training to your life, your metabolism will drop by 150-200 calories per day by the time you hit your 40s. By your 50s, your metabolism will drop by 300-500 calories per day! And by your 60th, your metabolism will have been reduced by 450-700 calories per day! By the time you’re 60, you will have to eat 450-700 fewer calories/day less than you did at 30 to maintain the same body size..

Most men over 40 look more like this. Their butt moved and took up permanent residence in their belly

However, this can all be reversed with some strength training so you can Maintain Muscle Mass.

Age related muscle loss is known as Sarcopenia. It's a disease! One that can be cured by Lifting Heavy Things.

2.?Lifting heavy things makes your muscles strong. Ever notice how everyday tasks, like carrying groceries, get harder? That’s because as muscle naturally declines with age, so does your strength.

You're not old, you're weak!

Strength training helps you keep (and even build) muscle to stay strong and capable.?

3. Strength training protects your bones as you age. Like everything else, bone density diminishes with age, making fractures more likely. The pressure from lifting weights signals your bones to get stronger, reducing the risk of breaks.?

4. Strength training helps reduce the risk of falls.

Hip fractures are the number one cause of nursing home admission. Approximately 50% of those who suffer a hip fracture never fully regain their mobility and independence, and 50% of those die within the first year. So a broken bone, especially the hips, is a serious matter for older adults.

More strength = better balance = fewer falls.?

5.?Strength training supports mental health.?Lifting improves mood, reduces stress, and boosts cognitive function.
