Agile Warriors: The Rise of Disciplined Agile?

In the sprawling metropolis of Sprintoria, chaos had become the norm. The heroes of Agile City, known as the Backlog Guardians, were once celebrated for their ability to push code, complete tasks, and deliver sprints faster than anyone. But now, the cracks were showing.

The villain, Scope Creep, had struck once again, leaving the Guardians scrambling. Deadlines loomed like dark clouds over the city, and stakeholders—once patient allies—had become restless. Agile wasn’t as easy as it used to be. It seemed like every week, new features, shifting priorities, and customer demands pushed the Guardians to their limits.

The Call for a New Strategy At the heart of Sprintoria, a seasoned leader, Captain Iteration—a project manager renowned for her sharp instincts—gathered her team. "Something's off," she declared in a serious tone. "We’re moving fast, but it feels like we're going in circles. Scope Creep is winning. We need a new strategy."

The team was a mix of Agile warriors, each with their own strengths:

  • Scrumlock, the sprint expert who lived by the Scrum playbook, now found himself tangled in unfinished tasks.
  • Kanbanator, the flow master who thrived in continuous delivery, was getting overwhelmed by shifting priorities.
  • And Pivotor, the innovation savant, couldn’t figure out how to launch the big ideas without getting bogged down in endless planning.

Their powers were strong, but they needed something new—something beyond the traditional frameworks. They needed... Disciplined Agile.

The Journey to the Disciplined Tower Captain Iteration and her team made their way to the Disciplined Tower, a legendary place where Agile teams had been transformed into high-performing champions. There, they met the ancient Agile sage, Master Flow. He explained that Agile was no longer a one-size-fits-all solution. To defeat Scope Creep and restore balance to Sprintoria, they needed to choose the right tools for each battle.

Master Flow presented them with the Six Lifecycles of Disciplined Agile:

  1. Continuous Delivery: Agile "Captain Iteration," Master Flow said, "this is the path of frequent, structured releases. You will deliver fully functional features each week. Your stakeholders will see progress often, and Scope Creep will find it harder to disrupt you."
  2. Continuous Delivery: Lean "For you, Kanbanator," said Master Flow, "this is your secret weapon. Continuous releases without the constraint of sprints. As soon as your work is done, it’s out. No more waiting, no more bottlenecks. But you must master the art of automation to wield it effectively."
  3. Exploratory: Lean Startup Pivotor stepped forward. "I need to experiment," he said. "I’ve got ideas, but we never have time to test them."
  4. Lean: Kanban-Based As the team strategized, Scrumlock looked unsure. "What if the plan needs more flexibility?" he asked. "What if Scope Creep’s attacks are too unpredictable for sprints?"
  5. Program Lifecycle: Team of Teams "But what if Scope Creep strikes across multiple fronts?" Captain Iteration asked, thinking of their growing city. "What if we have different teams working on different projects?"
  6. Agile (Scrum-Based) Finally, Master Flow turned to Scrumlock. "This one is for you," he said, revealing the Agile Scrum-Based lifecycle. "Your team will keep the sprints, but with added governance. It’s perfect for large teams that need oversight but want to keep the sprint pace."

The Final Battle Armed with the Six Lifecycles, Captain Iteration and the Backlog Guardians returned to Sprintoria, ready to face Scope Creep once and for all. Each team member played their role perfectly—Pivotor launched rapid experiments, Kanbanator delivered updates faster than ever, and Scrumlock kept the larger teams aligned and moving forward.

With each release, Sprintoria grew stronger. Features were shipped on time, Scope Creep’s powers waned, and stakeholders were delighted with the team's newfound clarity and control.

The Moral for Project Managers In this epic Agile adventure, the lesson is clear: Agile isn’t one-size-fits-all. As your projects grow, evolve, and face new challenges, your approach needs to adapt. The Six Lifecycles of Disciplined Agile give you the tools to tailor your process for every scenario. Whether you’re battling unpredictable changes or scaling up across multiple teams, there’s a path that fits.

So, project managers, the next time Scope Creep comes knocking, ask yourself—are you using the right Agile for the job?

What’s your team’s superpower? How are you using Disciplined Agile to keep your projects on track?
