Agile Project Management refers to organizational strategies that implement cross-functional and self-organizing teams with frequent releases. Waterfall has a fixed timeline, whereby the start and finish of the project are already mapped out from the beginning. While Agile is a lot more flexible and can account for experimenting with different directions. Waterfall focuses more on the bigger ideas that come up around marketing. So every last part of the project needs to be planned, discussed, analyzed, and tested from beginning to end. Agile strives to reduce the amount of time to complete products or projects within weeks. In this way, teams are mobilized to bring out the best in everyone; it's not about cutting corners or looking at things with a less analytical eye just to get something done.

The Agile approach is non-linear, customer-centric, and flexible. It is based on continuous improvement. So in digital marketing, this would be applied when dealing with large and complex projects. This could be working on a Social Media Ad Campaign that is extensive and of high value. It would demand intricate planning and lengthy communication processes. With tasks that demand large teams, organizing and planning becomes difficult. Coordination and team direction would have to be highly agile. Therefore, teams might have to track not only the campaign goals but also the team deliverables. The agile approach would work with the use of tools such as Asana, where you have to plan some things ahead. And those things then become dependable. Some things might have to be reviewed and improved later. So a linear or Waterfall approach would not be ideal in such situations. Should an ad not perform, there is enough room and time to apply the necessary changes.
Waterfall project management approach in digital marketing?
Waterfall project management is a method whereby projects are structured in a linear sequence. You can view this as a step-by-step method, where each deliverable must be completed to proceed to the next phase. It’s best to apply it if the end results are clearly defined from the beginning of the project. Digital Marketing is dynamic, and it’s changing constantly and quickly. Tools and methods are constantly updated. This means that we need room for flexibility, and the Waterfall method is not built on it, the Agile methodology is. The agile method values short bursts of work (sprints), and it allows you to take different directions even at a later stage of the project.
