Agile Transformation

Most of the technologist and teams in large IT organization refer or discuss the term ‘agile’ and ‘transformation’ at least once in a day via various communication channels (email, meetings, chat forums, discussion boards….) and yet each person has a different image and definition on what outcomes we are trying to achieve via agile transformation.

Agile transformation with key outcome of organization agility is catching fire, and there is growing understanding of its benefits. There are multiple starting point to this journey and several paths but key outcomes expected are usually standard. The key pillars to focus on any agile transformation are

1.       Organization construct – How to transform static, siloed and hierarchically organization into rapid learning and decision making cycles

2.       People, Process and Technology – Value stream based focus from people, process and technology perspective to drive the agility

3.       Product & Business - How clear is the product strategy to the people that are implementing it? What is the connection between the strategy and the daily software development work? The health of your business and the reception of your products reveal much here.

4.       Focusing on culture and the change team – These are evangelist who help teams to achieve the agile objectives. Agile is, above all, a mind-set. Without the right mind-set, all other parts of the agile operating system can be in place, and yet organization will see few benefits

In the transformation phase every organization would have multiple programmes and initiatives which should link to either one of the above key focus areas and hence it is important that every team and its member should connect to the bigger picture and are able to link the work/delivery to outcomes.

We have multiple detailed whitepapers, books, blogs and POD casts which will provide information on all of the above focus areas and not everything would fit as it is in the context of any one organization but if as a team everyone is clear on the bigger picture and immediate outcomes expected that is real meaning of ‘Agile team and culture’

Finally – Being Agile is to take first of many steps and best way to be Agile is; go Agile, step-by-step

Well Articulated Bhavesh Bhurat Unlike a traditional Waterfall framework, Agile requires work to be completed in teams. This means organizational structure may need to shift from functional silos to product-based, cross-functional teams. It's not essential to change the manager to whom the team members report, but it is necessary for all managers involved to agree upon a universal set of expectations and standards.

Well said Bhavesh. As we know, #agility requires a change in #mindset (from fixed to growth), and mindsets are tough to change. So yes, the key is to go slow, bring in a change (maybe with a pilot implementation), showcase the results (which usually are amazing), and then people are bound to come on board. Once you have a great culture in place, tools add further flavour to the entire setting. ??
