Agile software development is all about having fun! (Part VIII): Why it is fun!
Read Part VII
Rakesh was getting little restless with the long discussion. He finally intervened.
Rakesh: Guys, it all started because Ebin said Agile software development is also fun! Can you guys let him tell "Why" so?
Sunil: I understand Rakesh wanted to hear that we all are really having fun at work!
Ebin: Let me tell you what I mean by that. We have had a great discussion about Why Agile, What is Agile, Values and Principles of Agile. When we discussed those, all of you mentioned that it is basic fundamental human values and principle and 'nothing software about it'. We have also seen real world example of how Agile we are in all walks of our life, be it house construction, or be on the road driving, or our personal relationships. Can someone recall all those fundamental values we discussed?
Rakesh: Trust, Respect, Collaboration, Learning
Sunil: Transparency, Open communication, Good Relationships
Mathew: Courage, Commitment, Openness, Focus, Flexibility
Ebin: Wonderful. Now can you tell me where do you see all these in action in your life?
Rakesh: In my family. I think in our family we value all these.
Mathew: With our close friends as well.
Ebin: Exactly. If I may ask you to recall the best moment in your life what that would be?
Sunil: It is the time spend with our family and friends.
Ebin: Super. Have you ever wondered why is it so? In my perspective we (any human being) love to be in place where they are respected, valued and trusted. When there is trust and respect, relationship and bonding emerges. We feel courageous and committed. We also see that a common belief system emerges. You get a sense of belonging. You will have real fun and Joy.
I see Agile principles and practices as an opportunity to get these basics right for our work life as well.
What happens if all your team mates become your best friends and you feel valued and trusted and respected?
Rakesh: I will love to go to office every day!
Ebin: And?
Sunil: We will have fun and Joy.
Ebin: Awesome. You said it! I hope you will enjoy Agile software development with your best friends!
Ebin is a good writer and thought leader. I was happy and honored to get him to use the first few parts of this idea and publish it in the Afterword of Agile Noir (coming to FlipKart too): https://www.createspace.com/6309438
