User Stories & Acceptance Criteria in Scrum

In Scrum, User Stories and Acceptance Criteria help teams define and deliver value to users efficiently. They ensure that features are well understood, testable, and meet stakeholder expectations.


What is a User Story?

A User Story is a short, simple description of a feature from the user's perspective. It follows a structured format:

?? User Story Template: "As a [user role], I want [goal] so that [reason/benefit]."

?? Example: "As a customer, I want to reset my password so that I can regain access to my account."

Why Use User Stories?

? Focuses on user needs and business value

? Encourages collaboration and shared understanding

? Keeps requirements simple and flexible


What are the Acceptance Criteria?

Acceptance Criteria define the conditions that must be met for a User Story to be considered complete.

?? Example Acceptance Criteria: For the password reset User Story:

? Users receive a password reset email when they enter their registered email.

? The reset link expires after 24 hours.

? Users can set a new password that meets security requirements.

Why Use Acceptance Criteria?

? Ensures clarity on expected functionality

? Defines when a story is “done”

? Helps testers verify the feature works correctly

? Prevents scope creep


Best Practices for Writing Good User Stories & Acceptance Criteria

? Keep User Stories short and clear

? Make Acceptance Criteria specific and testable

? Involve the whole Scrum team in defining them

? Use real-world user needs as a guide

? Ensure they align with the Definition of Done (DoD)

? Vague User Stories (e.g., “I want a better experience”)

? Missing or unclear Acceptance Criteria

? Stories that are too big—break them down if needed
