Agile & Penny Game

Agile project management is an iterative, flexible and people-oriented approach to project management. It values delivering working software quickly, and adapting to changes as they occur. Agile is commonly used in software development, but can be applied to a wide range of projects and industries.

Among the many benefits of Agile, including Flexibility, Collaboration, Customer Satisfaction & Continuous Improvement, lies the value of Faster Delivery.

A simple, yet effective illustration of this value, we can find in the Agile Penny Game.

The game is designed to give participants a hands-on experience with Agile practices, helping them understand how these approaches can be used to improve and increase customer satisfaction through faster deliver.

How the game is played?

The game is typically played in teams and is best with at least 5 players, with a recommended maximum of 10 participants. Participants take on different roles (analyst, designer, developer, tester and so on...), and the goal of the game is to produce as many "features" as possible in the shortest time or by a specified deadline. The team is given a limited number of pennies (10, for example), to represent the features they need to deliver. The team must work together to deliver the features as efficiently as possible, while minimizing waste and improving their processes over time.

The game is typically played over several rounds (I believe 4-6 round would be good), with each round building upon the previous one. After each round, the team has to log the time it took to provide first and last deliverable to the customer, and has the opportunity to reflect on their performance, identify areas for improvement, and make changes to their processes. This continuous improvement process is a key aspect in Agile methodology.

Upon completion of the Agile Penny Game, participants will gain a better understanding of how Agile can lead to improved efficiency, reduced waste, and enhanced customer satisfaction through faster delivery.

In conclusion, the Agile Penny Game is fun & effective learning tool for understanding Agile methodology through hands-on experience.

Thanks for sharing this Yaniv. Another way of practicing and learning Agile methods would be to play our game: https://beingaprojectmanager.com/agile-board-game-workshop/ We should talk about it :-)
