Agile Guardrails: An Alternative to Methodologies

When I'm asked to help tech teams increase agility, those teams have typically adopted an agile methodology already - usually Scrum. Yet in spite of this, delivery remains slow and unpredictable. In other words adopting an agile methodology is no guarantee of achieving agility. Moreover, a one-size-fits-all blanket methodology approach can be a hindrance as much as a help.
I now take a methodology-agnostic approach, using guardrails as an alternative. I've found this provides teams with clearer direction and enables a greater level of autonomy and flexibility. In this article I'll discuss the benefits of using guardrails and share the default set I typically use.
