The agile culture journey at Bupa

In order to transform our business, we need to increase the “Agility” in how we work. The Bupa eco-Disruptors are trying out Agile methods in their teams as they get stuck into eco-Disruptive – our global talent programme that brings together our sustainability and digital transformation ambitions with an agile culture… but what is an agile culture to Bupa ? And how will it enable our progress towards our global 3x6 strategy?

Agile started off as an approach to developing software 20 years ago and is now being recognized as a management revolution. It’s evolved into a way to collaborate better at enterprise scale, break the functional silos, get the right things done quickly and effectively, while constantly learning and improving, and adapting to new customer opportunities and problems.

To our teams here at Bupa, thinking with an agile mindset reminds us to continuously learn and adapt and to develop a system of work that can flex and deliver at the right pace for the problem, at all levels of the organisation.

The key to our success is organizing around customer value delivery and creation - so we "Build or Do the Right Things at the Right Time". With our ambition to be ‘the world’s most customer-centric healthcare company’ in mind, we need to shorten the distance between the customer need, now and emerging, and the resulting work to be done.

In our recent video to the Group, we talk about how Agile starts with a mindset, what we mean by agile culture and how this way of thinking can benefit Bupa and essentially our customers.

One thing I have learned along this journey to agility is?that Agile is truly an attitude and not a technique with boundaries.?As Alistair Cockburn , one of the original authors of the Agile Manifesto puts it “we wouldn’t ask “can I use agile here?”, we would ask “how can I act in an agile way here?”.”

This is one of the reasons Bupa is a great place to work - bringing together sustainability, digital transformation and an agile culture - which will have more impact together than the sum of the parts.
