A(gh) Unanimous Decision to Maintain the Status Quo

Updated May 2020. Originally published April 2018.

This article is about systems change in the context of inter-provincial trade barriers, and why this matters in the drive to reboot the Canadian economy in the face of CV19 disruption.

Does that headline feel like an ice bucket experience??If you’re a Canadian business owner and forward-thinking innovator looking to build a brand across Canada with an efficient trading ecosystem, my bet is you’re feeling a chill.?If you’re a Canadian consumer who wants access to products and services, at fair value, my bet is you’re not feeling any warmer.

The?Supreme Court of Canada’s decision in the Gerard Comeau case should be known from coast-to-coast-to-coast and inspire all Canadians to understand its impact.??

map of Canada

Liberalizing inter-provincial trade barriers is complex but the upside to our Canadian economy is significant.

Estimated effects of liberalization of Canadian inter-provincial trade barriers:?$50-$130 billion

By comparison, the estimated effects of CETA on Canada in GDP: $7.9 billion

The Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA)?went into effect September 2017. From the website: "It will create jobs, strengthen economic relations and boost Canada's trade with the world’s second-largest market. CETA is a progressive free trade agreement…..boost your bottom line…. Canadian producers, manufacturers and exporters are now able to export to the EU like never before".

The proposition is not one or the other - it's both. The benefits of trade across domestic and international markets are significant. Advancing the unravelling of inter-provincial trade barriers, with a modern context, is the proposition.

Canadian pride is deeply embedded in my personal and professional life. My career has taken me to nine provinces and NWT working with people on emerging and established brands. Having lived in Alberta, BC and Ontario, and traveled many roads through communities small and large, I know the sentiments mentioned above are shared by many Canadians.

The new year has brought chaos and uncertainty to every citizen and organization. Globally, we're all feeling it: change. In many contexts, including liberalizing inter-provincial trade barriers, systems change is the calling.

Systems change is the calling.

If not now, when.
