Aggressive behaviors are common in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). They may display aggressive behaviors towards others or even themselves. Aggressive behaviors in autism can include temper tantrums, self harm, sudden violent behaviors, etc. These behaviors make the integration of these children into the society.
An autistic child especially indulges in aggressive behaviors since they have communication issues. Some of these behaviors may have roots in pain, hunger, etc.
In Applied Behavior Analysis therapy, the therapist looks at the different aspects of a certain behavior:
1.????? Escape: A behavior to escape a certain situation or doing something
2.????? Attention: A child may exhibit a behavior to gain attention
3.????? Access: When a child wants access to an object such as a toy, the child may exhibit a particular behavior
4.????? Automatic reinforcement: Behaviors which makes the child feel good or manage the sensory inputs.
A behavioral therapist can work with the parent of an autistic child to manage behaviors through a behavior plan. A behavior plan can include identification, understanding, management and prevention. It can have the following components:
-??????? Defining the function of an aggressive behavior
-??????? Defining what the aggressive behavior itself is
-??????? Proactive and reactive strategies for when the child exhibits a behavior
-??????? Defining replacement behaviors for a certain aggressive behavior
Other strategies that can be adopted while the child is going through aggressive behavior are:
-??????? Changing the environment of the child in case the child is responding to sensory sensitivities
-??????? Modifying routines gradually by using visual schedules
-??????? Helping the child to recognize and manage their emotions

-??????? Working to improve both verbal and non-verbal communication skills
-??????? Positive reinforcement of good behavior
Applied behavior analysis therapy can be effective in helping an autistic child cope with aggressive behaviors. Additionally, a speech therapist can work with the child to improve communication and bring down the tendency for aggressive behaviors.
