Agentic Applications: From Theory to Implementation and Mutation

In the evolution of digital interfaces, the concept of agentic applications represents a pivotal moment. Here, we’re not merely theorizing about the possibilities; we’re demonstrating the implementation and showcasing adaptive UI/UX designs that foster trust, safety, and engagement. This article will explore how these principles shape user experiences in agentic systems, with a focus on practical design elements and the core tenets driving these applications.

Our agentic applications are built around three fundamental principles: utility, engagement dynamics, behavioral understanding with trust and safety based AI routines. Utility ensures that the application delivers its primary functional purpose efficiently and reliably. Engagement dynamics focus on designing a user experience that keeps users returning, not through manipulation but through meaningful and valuable interactions. Trust and safety involve embedding mechanisms that foster user confidence in the system’s integrity and protect their data and well-being. These tenets guide the design of adaptive interfaces, emphasizing a balance between automation and human agency.

Example to help illustrate - Simple home screen for a functional application VISUAL AID

A hallmark of successful applications is an intuitive and welcoming homepage, especially in agentic systems where complexity often arises. Upon login, users are greeted with a blend of familiar and forward-thinking design elements. Core features such as Profile, Notifications, Messages, and Image Storage take center stage, providing the comforts of late 2020s applications and offering a sense of continuity. A prominent set of 13 buttons serves as gateways to the application’s capabilities, designed for clarity and ease of selection to ensure users can immediately discern their options. Additionally, a classic navigation bar at the bottom of the screen provides consistency and quick access to key sections.

While the homepage features 13 buttons, their usage is driven by predictive analytics and adaptive design. Primary utility focuses on cosmetic procedures, the main functional draw of the application. These medically approved procedures require user consent and embody the trust and safety tenet. AI plays a supportive role here but always under human oversight. Secondary utility involves image tracking, a high-priority feature given the visual nature of this segment, allowing users to view, manage, and analyze their stored images effortlessly. Tertiary utility is offered through secure messaging, accessible via a smaller button at the top. This feature provides patients with encrypted, user-controlled communication channels for one-on-one or group interactions with their medical team. Finally, a "Future Goals Visualization" feature allows users to visualize themselves in a future state. This innovative capability integrates AI to inspire and motivate users while adhering to medical and ethical standards.

By analyzing user behavior, button utilization is divided between utility and engagement. Utility-driven interactions, such as procedures and image tracking, take precedence, while engagement-driven elements like future visualization foster deeper connections with the application. This prioritization ensures the design remains user-centric while subtly encouraging exploration of advanced features.

Building trust in agentic applications requires transparent, secure, and user-first design approaches. Consent-driven interactions ensure features like cosmetic procedures are only presented with explicit user consent, adhering to medical and ethical guidelines. Messaging systems are encrypted and user-controlled, safeguarding confidentiality. Users are informed about the role of AI in features like future visualization, reinforcing trust and ensuring transparency.

The homepage’s design evolves based on user behavior, showcasing three distinct states:

  1. Classic High Utility View: The initial design prioritizes simplicity and accessibility, featuring large buttons that allow new users to navigate the application easily. This layout ensures adoption by presenting key utilities such as cosmetic procedures, image tracking, and secure messaging in a straightforward, intuitive manner. It’s ideal for onboarding users, helping them explore the application’s core functionalities without overwhelm.
  2. Adapted for User Evolution: As the AI processes more user data and detects a shift in behavior, the UI adapts to emphasize the features most relevant to the user’s preferences. For instance, if a user begins to rely heavily on the "Future Goals Visualization" feature, the interface reallocates screen real estate to bring this feature to the forefront. This dynamic adjustment ensures that the user’s evolving needs are met, creating a personalized experience that fosters deeper engagement. The design highlights the user’s preferred functionalities while maintaining access to other core features.
  3. Minimalist, Task-Oriented View: For users who primarily follow instructions from medical professionals and engage less with visual tools, the UI simplifies dramatically. This version minimizes visual clutter, emphasizing direct task-oriented interactions. The Camera button, typically hidden in other views, becomes prominently displayed to support frequent image updates requested by the surgeon. By reducing the number of visible elements, this view caters to users who see the application as a focused tool for their surgical journey, prioritizing efficiency and clarity over exploratory engagement.

Agentic applications are more than technological marvels; they are tools designed to empower users. By integrating adaptive UI/UX with a focus on trust, safety, and core application tenets, we bridge the gap between complex systems and everyday usability. As we continue to refine these interfaces, the future of agentic systems lies in their ability to evolve with user needs, balancing automation with the human touch.

What about the AI? - This is where its gets interesting

Let’s talk about the AI—not the sci-fi fantasy kind, but the meticulously engineered systems working tirelessly behind the scenes to transform your experience. The AI here isn’t about replacing anyone; it’s about supercharging the entire process, working at a scale that humans simply cannot match. This isn’t just a feature—it’s a foundation.

At the heart of the system lies the AI Multi-Agent System (MAS), a sophisticated network of specialized agents. These agents don’t just process data—they toil over billions of measurements, ensuring every image, data point, and chart is meticulously analyzed. This isn’t just about crunching numbers; it’s about deriving insights so precise and comprehensive that they redefine what’s possible in patient care. Every pixel, every data entry, every anomaly—nothing escapes their notice.

What makes this AI exceptional is its ability to scale. While a human might analyze dozens or even hundreds of data points, these agents handle billions with unwavering accuracy. They connect dots across vast datasets, identifying patterns and trends that might take years of manual review to uncover. This scalability ensures that no patient is overlooked, and no detail is missed, providing insights that are not only reliable but transformative.

And yet, even at this scale, the AI doesn’t work in isolation. Its insights are channeled back to the SME (Subject Matter Expert), often your doctor, ensuring that every recommendation or decision is grounded in expert judgment. The AI acts as a tireless assistant, empowering medical professionals with the kind of data-backed insights that improve outcomes and streamline care. The "Human in the Middle" model ensures a critical layer of trust, aligning the strengths of AI with the wisdom of human expertise.

This interplay between scale and precision transforms the way the application operates. It’s not just about making things easier—it’s about redefining what’s possible. The AI isn’t just helpful; it’s indispensable, enabling an application that doesn’t just react to user input but actively enhances the user’s journey.

Below, the diagram illustrates how this system operates: the collaboration between you, your doctor, the application, and the tireless AI agents working in harmony to deliver unprecedented value. This is where the magic happens—at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and human expertise.

The sequence demonstrates how the application integrates with the doctor, showcasing the "Human in the Middle" or "SME (Subject Matter Expert) in the Middle" model for AI approvals. In this setup, the application ensures that all AI-generated recommendations and analyses are reviewed and approved by a qualified medical professional. This approach maintains a high standard of trust and safety, ensuring that decisions affecting users are backed by human expertise. The SME acts as a vital gatekeeper, ensuring the AI serves as a tool for enhancing, rather than replacing, professional judgment.

Beyond the individual doctor-user interactions, the application connects to an AI Multi-Agent System (MAS), which orchestrates a network of specialized AI agents. These agents operate within a subsystem dedicated to large-scale services. Each agent performs specific tasks such as analyzing images, processing data points, and providing secure, patient-specific insights. These agents work tirelessly and securely to ensure that every piece of data and chart is analyzed with precision, generating valuable insights for the doctor and the user.

The MAS and its subsystem of specialized agents collaborate seamlessly with the application. For example, when a user uploads images, the subsystem agents analyze them for patterns, progress, or anomalies. These findings are then funneled back into the MAS, where higher-level agents synthesize the data and present actionable insights to the SME or the user. This tightly integrated system ensures that AI support is not only comprehensive but also highly contextualized and relevant.

Terms such as "Human in the Middle" and "Multi-Agent System" emphasize the critical balance between human oversight and AI capabilities. In this model, AI does not diminish user engagement but instead amplifies the experience. It does so by automating tedious tasks, ensuring accuracy, and providing insights that would be challenging or time-consuming to derive manually. This collaboration between humans and AI fosters a sense of trust while enabling users to benefit from advanced, data-driven tools.

In essence, the integration of human expertise, application interfaces, and AI agents creates a symbiotic ecosystem. The MAS enhances the user's journey by ensuring precision and support, while the "Human in the Middle" model safeguards decision-making integrity. Together, these elements deliver an application experience that is both empowering and deeply impactful.
