The year 2024 marked a pivotal year in the advancement of artificial intelligence, with “Generative AI” becoming mainstream. Although Generative AI capabilities continued to evolve faster than anticipated in the first place, something was missing in the overall picture.

The typical Generative AI services, available mainly in chatting value-proposition, have many typical limitations. For example, these chatting-oriented services can’t chase long-term goals. Although most of them currently have the ability to consume up-to-date information, memorizing what has already been consumed still has many limitations. Finally, these tools can’t extend their pre-trained capabilities in the real environment. All these limitations represent gaps before being able to mimic human intelligence.?

Although intelligent agents were in its hype around 25 years ago, computing and algorithmic powers were the bottlenecks that prevented these agents from going to the aimed practical productivity plateau. However, with the rise of large language models of Generative AI, intelligent agents started to appear again, but with a brand-new perspective.

In 2024, many experts in the field predicted the rise of these intelligent agents; however, by the end of the year, all these predictions had been elevated to the expectation that intelligent agents would dominate the field in 2025 and be branded as “Agentic AI.”

The impact of this “Agentic AI” wave is challenging to be predicted accurately; however, its impact on software engineering and development will be dramatic, either in changing how the software development team performs its roles or in changing how software systems are architected.

Hence, “Agentic AI Software,” the next generation of Generative AI, will be mainstream in 2025 and will dramatically change how software systems are architected in general and represent a new paradigm shift in the software engineering industry.
