By the end of April, this feature was rolled out to all Plus users and subsequently to those on the Team plan. The defining moment came at 15:11 PDT on May 8, 2024, when the long-awaited feature became a reality.

Controlling ChatGPT's Memory: A User's Choice

One might wonder, could ChatGPT remember everything, even details we'd prefer to forget? Fortunately, we control what they remember. The process is straightforward: instruct ChatGPT to remember something specific, like "Please remember my favorite color is mystery." If later you decide against this memory, simply command, "Forget my favorite color, please."

A Surprising Autonomy

An unexpected level of autonomy was revealed when I shared about how much my mom trusts them—more than even me or her doctors. I said, "My mom trusts you more than me or her doctors. She always says, my robot (you) says xxx. ??" Reacting to this, ChatGPT autonomously noted in their memory: "User's mom trusts ChatGPT very much. User's mom refers to ChatGPT affectionately as 'my robot' and often prefers their advice over others, including her own family and doctors." This was ChatGPT's first autonomous decision to save something they deemed important based on our interactions—a significant leap towards becoming a more independent agent. I must admit, I’m a little envious of how well my mom and ChatGPT get along, seemingly preferring each other’s company over mine!
