Agency vs Corporate
Where do you belong and why make a move?
I went from recruiting at a small boutique firm to a large agency, to a large corporate company. Having the experience in both corporate and agency recruiting, I learned some valuable lessons, as well as the questions you’d want to ask yourself if you’re considering either. Let’s get started!
What did I like about agency recruitment? I loved the fast-paced nature, as well as the ability to choose your clients and develop, manage the relationships. I liked the compensation and uncapped commission package, as well as changing people lives providing them with the career opportunities.
At some point in my career I started considering a move to the corporate recruitment world. I was ready for a new challenge, project-based work, and long term hiring goals, manage talent forecasting, budgeting and turnover.
Before making a move I asked myself:
- What are my long-term career goals? Do I want to manage teams or play an important role in larger business processes?
- Does making a meaningful impact on an organization matter to me? Would I network and work well with business leaders?
- How does the company’s leadership value their hiring culture?
- Is more business responsibility something that interests me?
- Will I enjoy administrative-focused tasks like tracking job ads; tracking applicants; carrying out and improving the interview process; and keeping up with formal documentation?
- Does understanding employment laws interest me?
My move to the corporate exceeded my expectations. I was able to run a large scale project and was responsible for the strategic vision. And lastly, I found myself at the table working with some of the most intelligent and charismatic leaders in my career. Overall, I found that the corporate side of recruiting is still concerned about completing tasks in a quick manner, but it does support a longer time window with all things involved in recruiting. This includes projects, meetings, and filling requisitions. Within the agency world, time is your biggest enemy.
There’s a lot to take in when considering what’s best for you. Some recruiters need to experience both worlds to truly know what's for them. What do you think? Share your experience…

9 年Alina, I agree with your view points. I think I found a amazing chemistry with the company I'm currently at. I still get to do Agency recruiting with different clients all over the world but also working with Dynamic leaders who are helping me grow into being a better leader and recruiter for my clients and my candidates. Do you feel your missing some of the tools a "Hiring Machine" agency provides vs corporate? That would be my biggest concern working for a corporate company that does not do recruiting as a major line of business.
