Agency producers, y’all supposed to be the bridge, right? Between creatives, clients, and production houses. You’re supposed to be making things pop, steering the ship, getting your hands dirty, but some of you end up just forwarding scripts ????
If you already out here handling it like a boss, this ain’t for you. You can skip this.
But for those of y’all still stuck in that “forward” routine like it’s your 9-to-5 — yeah, I’m talkin’ to you — it’s time to step up. I get it, sometimes you gotta deal with them big shot creatives tryna run the whole damn show. But listen, once you start owning your role, things start shifting.
Get in the mix, make sure the budget and timeline are locked before the script even leaves the office. ?? When you show up like you’re really here to make moves, even them creatives who try to shut you out will start giving you mad props. Why? Because they’ll see you ain’t just the “email guy.” You’ll be the one pulling strings behind the scenes, and trust me, that respect? It’ll come real quick. ????
Early Involvement ??♀? – Get in on that script development. If the creative team’s out here living in La La Land ??, tell them. Let them know if they’re way off the budget. Your job is to set the real expectations, not let them float around like they’re in fantasy land ?????????????.
Budget Transparency ??– Here’s a pro tip – GET THE CLIENT’S BUDGET UPFRONT ??! Don’t let them play the “I’m gonna make you work for months and then tell you I only have half the budget” game. No one’s got time for that nonsense ??. If they try it, shut it down quick, and educate them on why they should just be real with you from the jump.
Choosing Production Partners ?? – Stop asking every damn production house under the sun for director reels. Choose 3-4 that fit within the budget and vision ??. If the budget’s tiny, don’t go asking for A-list directors – we ain’t trying to make the next Avengers movie on a shoestring budget.
Post-Production – If costs go up because someone decided to throw in random script changes, you need to have that convo with the client ?, not the poor producer. Your job’s to keep that client in check and chase payments when they owe cash.
What’s NOT Your Job – Seriously, stop acting like a gatekeeper ????. Your role is to stay connected with new talent, fresh producers, and make sure everyone gets a fair shot. You’re not here to make sure only your favorites get the gigs – that’s a terrible look ??.
So, producers, time to step up, stop being the script-forwarding assistant, and start running the damn show. Make it happen! ????
