Ageless Resumes Backfire When You're Age 40+

Ageless Resumes Backfire When You're Age 40+

Ageless resumes are often recommended to age 40+ candidates by outplacmeent, most career coaches/authors, certified professional resume writers, high volume "resume mills" and job board resume services.

These are resumes designed to hide your age from employers, by hiding dates from the early part of your career.

But don't fall for it ... this advice almost always backfires, even though it's some of the most common advice given to age 40+ job seekers.

Here are 3 reasons why ageless resumes almost never work, but almost always cause you to lose opportunities.

  1. ATSs Can Catch Your Excluded Information: The theory behind ageless resumes is by hiding early dates, you can stop ATSs from screening you out. This doesn't work, as ATSs can also be used to screen for excluded data (including dates).
  2. Visual Screening Catches You Excluding Dates: If your resume gets through the ATS, a recruiter or HR rep visually screens your resume, to decide if they'll recommend you for interviews, By the time your reader gets to the point where you're hiding dates, they're interested and reading in detail ... every word. Missing dates stick out like a red flag when reading resumes in detail. The hiring manager can easily catch it also, making your reader wonder, are you hiding age or something worse?
  3. What First Impression Will You Make?: When you turn on your camera for a video intervies (or walk in the door for a face to face) what first impression will you make when you're clearly older than how your resume portrays you? Your interviewer immediately sees the deceipt ... their first impression. How can you gain an employer's trust when you make deceit your first impression?

Good thing there are more effective ways to beat ageism than deceit. Why not let me show you additional ways to beat ageism, so you can find a great job fast during the recession when you're over 40?

This is the 3rd recession I've recruited/coached through, so I've seen first hand what resume and job search strategies succeed during recessions. I've also seen mistakes candidates make, causing their recession job searches to fail. I've been through this before and know what works and what doesn't.

That's why numerous job seekers who work with me have already gotten job offers this March, April, May, June, July and August - every week since mid-March.

As a top national recruiter who reads hundreds of resumes per day, who has helped hundreds of thousands of candidates in their job search, and seen thousands of employers' job search processes from the inside, I've got a different perspective than most career coaches.

I see that most job seekers do essentially the same things, even when they think they are job searching differently. I see the mistakes that almost every age 40+ job seeker makes that make them lose great opportunities. I also see most job seekers were taught search methods that eliminate them from consideration, because they conflict with the employer's hiring process.

But I've been teaching job seekers to overcome ageism for 13+ years by using non-traditional resume/job search strategies that demonstrate impact rather than just being average. I'll show you how to beat ageism and find a great job during the recession by understanding employers' point of view and hiring processes ... and using this understanding to beat your competition.

(I'm not just a career coach. I've also been a top national recruiter for the last 16 years ... so you'll get advice from a different perspective - an insider's point of view.)

Let me show you what you can do now to change your job search and resume so you can beat ageism during the recession, even if you're also between jobs, trying to change careers or location, if your industry is in decline/consolidation, trying to overcome long term career gaps, family leave, find a remote job, turnaround your job search or other tough to solve job search problems.
