Hi there, it’s time again for your weekly #LifestyleTips & ideas. Today with tips for keeping your brain sharp, overcoming cybersickness in virtual reality, an innovation in measuring heart health, and dealing with hardship.

The Best Way to Improve Your #Neuroplasticity

… might be a very short #HIIT training (study).

While intermittent 20-hour fasting and exercise both had some neuroprotective effects, six all-out 40-second intervals (of cycling) boosted plasma and serum BDNF the most, supporting neuroplasticity, learning, and memory.

How to Overcome Cybersickness …

… Earlier this week, I spent some time in Virtual Reality (VR), checking out a live event and walking around in ‘my office.’

Unlike previous experiences … and the fitness & meditation sessions I enjoy, this time, I got nauseous even when slowing down my 'walking speed' using the handheld controllers.

I experienced 'cybersickness,' something up to about 80% of people seem to go through at least once (study).

But what is cybersickness?

#Cybersickness is a phenomenon where you get symptoms similar to motion sickness, which can include eye fatigue, headache, dizziness, feeling wonky on your legs, nausea, and vomiting while using virtual reality (VR) devices. The most common theory of why this happens is that the brain receives conflicting information from the visual and vestibular systems, leading to discomfort.

To overcome cybersickness, here are some ways that might help you …

When purchasing a VR headset, choose one with a latency of fewer than 20 milliseconds, a high frame rate, and a high refresh rate. While a narrower field of view doesn’t feel as immersive, it does reduce cybersickness, so it is something to consider

Keep your actual physical environment cool & well-aired

  • Make sure you're healthy (no headache, cold, hangover, or balance issues)
  • Choose virtual environments that allow for more natural movements or allow jumping from one spot to another instead of ‘walking’
  • If the virtual environment allows, move physically in the real world (with relevant safety measures in place) instead of using controllers
  • Start with less realistic-looking and less immersive experiences
  • Start with very short periods of time, even just one minute & extend over time as you feel more comfortable
  • Try looking at a fixed point in the virtual environment or focusing on the horizon line
  • Move very slowly in the virtual world limiting the difference between perceived and actual body speed
  • Even once you feel more comfortable, take regular breaks from using VR headsets

Without a doubt, #VirtualReality will be part of our daily life in the future. And while developers need to do their job to design experiences that minimize sickness, it's good to start playing with it right now, so that by the time you truly need it, you're well acclimatized.?
