Are Age Tech Solutions Right for your Loved One?

Choosing the Right Technology to Support Aging Loved Ones

As families navigate the complexities of aging, technology can provide valuable support—when chosen and implemented correctly. Too often, families react to emergencies by purchasing multiple gadgets without a clear strategy, leading to frustration, unused devices, and unmet needs. Instead of reacting in crisis mode, a thoughtful approach can ensure technology truly enhances safety and independence.

Key Considerations for Age Tech Solutions

Selecting the right technology starts with understanding individual needs and lifestyle preferences. Common challenges include medication management, mobility concerns, and home safety. However, not all solutions work for every situation. Families must avoid common pitfalls, such as:

  • Impulse Buying – Purchasing multiple devices without evaluating their usability or effectiveness.
  • Overcomplicated Solutions – Implementing technology that is too difficult for the older adult to use.
  • Lack of Coordination – Failing to assign responsibility for setup, maintenance, and ongoing support.

A Smarter Approach: The Family Technology Assessment Guide

To help families make informed decisions, I developed the Is Technology Right for Your Loved One? guide. This resource provides a step-by-step framework to assess needs, explore appropriate solutions, and integrate technology seamlessly into daily life.

By taking a proactive approach, families can avoid costly mistakes and ensure that technology supports—not complicates—their loved one’s independence.

Yes, we stress this all the time with our dementia doll therapy. Our dolls (tools not toys)are definitely easier to understand and much less expensive to implement than technology, but we have something in common in that what we stress that you have to have a plan. We don’t just hand them a doll and say go play - there are Activities and plans and procedures that go into it this technique. It’s the same thing with what you’re talking about with technology it’s not good enough, just to simply buy it and give it to them. We need to help caregivers learn How these tools can be used to to engage, redirect, transition, provide responsibility, ownership, pride, and above all purpose. Loved reading your post.
