Age is just a number...
We’ve had another great week in The Fitness Society.
A big highlight for me was getting my 2 youngest nephews in for a “workout”. I’ve always appreciated the opportunity to encourage (brainwash!) my nephews and niece into developing a passion for the benefits of working out when I get the chance.
I’m biased but for me the best thing you could help give someone is a real excitement around looking after their health.
Another highlight in the gym at the moment is the quarterly fitness testing we give our members the chance to do.
In contrast to my nephews, a lot of our members are at an age where many people can let their fitness slip.
Late 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and beyond. Maybe at a point in where jobs, kids and responsibilities can make getting a structured regime going a bit more challenging.
Many have significantly improved their numbers and are hitting PB’s their younger selves wouldn’t have dreamt of.
If you’ve been thinking about getting into shape at a slightly later age than usual, start with a solid reason why. I’ve thought of loads of reasons to stay in shape which range from business to, uncle duties.
Everyone’s reasons will be individual but along with looking your best, start considering the wider benefits of improved health, strength, energy etc.

Other tips include:
- Realising you can make progress, whatever your age. I’ve seen far too many people (of so many ages) with various ailments make some serious progress to ever be convinced otherwise at this stage.
- Don’t neglect stretching and joint mobility. If you do, it will catch up with you at some stage!
- Work to make keeping fit something you’re excited about doing, not an additional stressor. Find a place you enjoy training and acknowledge all your wins. Not just weight loss ones.
- Incorporate all the planes of movement into your workouts. In other words, get someone to put a well thought out program together for you!
- Hydrate, and eat as many real foods as possible.
I could keep going, but do some of the above and you’ll be well on your way to developing a solid fitness routine.
And probably giving yourself the best present that you can as a result…
