As we journey through life, it's easy to fall into the trap of viewing aging as a burden rather than a blessing. But what if I told you that embracing your age could be the key to unlocking a more fulfilling and joyful existence? Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with James B. Flaherty, an 89-year-old author and former advertising creative director, who shared his wisdom on how to approach each day with enthusiasm and positivity. His insights during our podcast episode left me inspired and eager to share them with you.
The Mirror Challenge: Your Biggest Critic
James shared a powerful lesson he learned from his mother: every morning, we face our biggest critic in the bathroom mirror. It's up to us to decide how we greet that reflection. Will we sigh and dread another day, or will we smile and embrace the gift of a new beginning? This simple shift in perspective can set the tone for your entire day. Instead of focusing on wrinkles or gray hairs, try looking in the mirror and saying, "Good God, another day! What an opportunity to see, hear, taste, touch, speak, and share love."
Discovering Your Purpose at Any Age
One of the keys to embracing your age is finding and pursuing your purpose. James emphasized that as we move through different life stages, our purpose may evolve. The key is to look inside yourself and define what truly matters to you. Ask yourself:
? What brings me joy?
? How can I contribute to my community?
? What skills or talents do I have that I'm not fully utilizing?
Remember, it's never too late to pursue a new passion or pick up an old one. Whether it's painting, volunteering, or writing that novel you've always dreamed about, now is the time to act.
Owning Your "Weird"
James introduced a concept that resonated deeply with me: owning your "weird." As spiritual entrepreneurs, we often feel pressure to conform to industry norms. However, your uniqueness is your superpower. Embrace what makes you different. Your quirks, your unconventional ideas, your unique perspective - these are the things that set you apart in a crowded marketplace. Don't be afraid to let your authentic self shine through in your business.
The Mindset Shift: You Are As Old As You Think
One of the most powerful takeaways from my conversation with James was the importance of mindset in aging. He shared a quote from comedian George Burns, who at 95 said, "I can't die now. I'm booked!" This attitude of staying engaged and having plans for the future can keep you young at heart. James himself has a 10-year plan at 89! It's not about denying your age, but rather about maintaining a zest for life and continual growth.

Practical Steps to Embrace Your Age
Facing Life's Challenges with Grace
Of course, embracing your age doesn't mean life will always be smooth sailing. James shared his experience as a caregiver for someone with dementia, emphasizing the importance of facing challenges head-on. When life throws you curveballs, ask yourself:
? Can we fix the situation?
? If not, how can we accommodate and make the best of it?
Remember, it's through these challenges that we often find our greatest strength and wisdom.
Spreading Kindness: A Ripple Effect
James shared a beautiful story about a young couple who helped him when he was low on gas. This act of kindness inspired him to encourage others to put out a helping hand, expecting nothing in return. As entrepreneurs, we have the power to create positive change not just through our businesses, but through our daily interactions. A simple compliment or act of kindness can create a ripple effect, spreading positivity far beyond our immediate circle.
Embracing your age isn't about clinging to youth or resigning yourself to getting "old." It's about recognizing the value of your experiences, the wisdom you've gained, and the unique perspective you bring to the world. It's about waking up each day with gratitude and purpose, ready to make the most of the gift of life. As James so beautifully put it, "I am present, living, giving, loving, and I try." Let's all strive to embody this philosophy, regardless of the number of candles on our birthday cake. What steps will you take today to embrace your age and live more fully? Share your thoughts in the comments.
