Age No Bar (#32)
At 18, Zeng Zhiying was one of China's top table tennis players, destined for Olympic glory. But her dreams were dashed when the International Table Tennis Federation introduced a new rule before the 1988 Seoul Olympics: the two sides of the paddle could no longer be black, but had to be different colours. This seemingly minor change threw off Zeng's game, as she often rotated her paddle to confuse opponents. The different colours made her moves more predictable. Devastated, Zeng retired from the sport at just 20 years old.
Shortly after, she moved to Chile, invited by a school to become a table tennis coach. There, she built a new life, far from the competitive world she once knew. However, her journey in table tennis was far from over. Years later, her son picked up the sport, rekindling her passion. She put her own ambitions on hold again to support his budding career.
In 2020, as the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, Zeng sought exercise and solace in table tennis. What began as a way to stay healthy reignited her love for the game. She set herself an ambitious goal: to compete in the 2024 Olympics representing Chile. Despite her age, she trained relentlessly, defying expectations and overcoming numerous obstacles. At 58, Zeng made it to the Paris 2024 Olympics, a testament to her undying spirit.
In the preliminary rounds, she faced 46-year-old Lebanese player Mariana Sahakian. The match was intense, with long rallies showcasing the skills of both seasoned players. Zeng fought valiantly but lost the game.
Despite the loss, Zeng felt no sadness. Her husband, sons, and loved ones cheered her on from the packed stands of the South Paris Arena. "But I don't feel very sad, because this is sport. My husband, my sons, and everyone I love and care about were there shouting my name. I feel so content," she said after her defeat.

Her Olympics may have lasted less than 24 hours, but Zeng planned to remain active in the sport she loved. She acknowledged that competing in another Olympics would be challenging, given her age. However, she intended to continue playing at the Masters level and participating in tournaments as long as her body allowed.
Zeng's story is a powerful reminder that the journey matters more than the destination. Her Olympic dream was not just about winning medals but about rekindling a lost passion, reconnecting with old friends, and inspiring her loved ones.
Her resilience and determination show that it's never too late to chase your dreams, no matter the obstacles. The lesson here is clear: true contentment comes from pursuing what you love and cherishing the support of those who believe in you.
Age is no bar when passion drives your purpose. At 58, Zeng proved to the world that dreams have no expiration date!
