In the age of AI, are developers redundant? Part 2

Nowadays chatgpt and alike can indeed produce code of decent if not good quality.

In addition, for years we had tools and software that can produce drag and drop apps, websites etc. This is the so-called no low code trend: websites like Wix or platforms like Builder.ai allow you to build websites or apps without coding.

I already said why no/low code is not really threatening developers in Part 1.

Now let’s discuss if LLM (like chatgpt) can make developers obsolete.

Technically, yes it is possible.

As any language, like Italian into English, it is possible to translate one into the other automatically.?

In the same way you may expect that a rich programming language can be translated into text and vice versa.?

In other words, chatgpt will be a translator that translates different spoken languages or different programming languages irrespectively. No difference.

But what would happen then??

Hold your breath.. You may be going to ‘hybridise’ the 2 languages English and Python so you learn a bit of coding and a bit of English.

If you think this is crazy and way far fetched I will inform you that there are already examples.

First of all, if you want, you can easily read any text in Spanish or Arabic simply using an automatic translation without any need to know such languages.

Does that mean studying foreign languages is redundant? Does that mean no other books will be ever translated by the publisher because you can simply translate on demand?

The most common scenario is that while you are translating the book of your choice, chances are you are actually ‘picking up words of the new language’. You are not learning the whole language of course, but you are picking up some words from it.

And then there is the international space station.?

Out there there are both Russian and Westerners (American mainly). They do not speak neither English nor Russian, they speak… Runglish.?

For political, historical and cultural reasons, Russians in space may not know too well English and definitely Westerners may not know too well Russians.?

So they meet in the middle. An astronaut picks up words from the other language and viceversa.

In a way, chatgpt is allowing people who cannot code to interact with code while coders (which cannot communicate well usually) can express what they do.?

Both coders and non coders will pick up words of the language.

In the future we may all speak Pynglish.

PS: this is half of a joke. But it is very possible that technical words taken by programming (for loop, lambda, etc) will break through into common saying due to use of chatgpt by non coders. Coders will not disappear but they may merge with program manager duties.
