At age 64, restaurateur Steve Calvaneso isn't slowing down

After more than 40 years in the business, many restaurants owners seek ways to step back a bit.

That’s exactly what Steve Calvaneso was looking forward to – until his wife pointed out an opportunity in her hometown of Sanborn last summer.

Calvaneso’s Ultimate Restaurant Group was busy running four eateries and a catering operation.

Yet at 64, he jumped at the chance to buy the building at 5894 Ward Road in Sanborn, where he opened the Marlboro Kitchen and Bar in March. It’s the 12th restaurant he has opened.

How does he juggle it all? Calvaneso said he’s learned to share the load over the years. That, he said, is his secret to running multiple properties and keeping all the balls in the air.

Construction know-how meets political savvy in Giambra's new dispensary

Joel Giambra and Darcell Thomas had been working together for years before they decided to go into the weed business.

Giambra, the former Erie County executive who grew up on the West Side and spent years in both politics and real estate, has been a longtime advocate of legalizing marijuana.

“For over 20 years I’ve been talking about how inappropriate prohibition is and how it’s been shown to be a failed public policy,” he said. “The War on Drugs was a huge failure. It became obvious to me that at some point there’s going to be adult-use, and when it did happen, I saw it as an opportunity to partner with Darcell.”? |? Read more
