Age 40+ Job Seekers: Why Do You Think Your Responsibilities, Experience Or Qualifications Prove Impact To Employers?

I ran a LinkedIn poll yesterday, to see how age 40, 50 and 60+ job seekers think they'll prove the impact they can provide to employers.

And as of the writing of this post, 89% of age 40+ job seekers thought their responsibilities (14%). experience (67%), or qualifications (14%) prove how successful they'll be to their next employer.

Look at your resume carefully ... when you describe responsibilities/experience/ qualifications on your resume, you're describing what you did - The things you're proud of.

Here are a few reasons this doesn't prove impact to target employers:

• You Make Employers Guess At Success Instead Of Proving It: Just because you had certain responsibilities/experience/or qualifications doesn't prove that whether you were great or terrible at doing your job. You're making an employer guess. And just using the word success doesn't prove it to an employer - It makes them skeptical.
• The Things You're Most Proud Of Don't Matter To Employers: So what if you're proud of a responsibility, experience or achievement? Unless it solves a problem the hiring manager is trying to solve, why would they care? The things that are important to you have a very low chance of being important to a hiring manager. This can result in you being told you're the wrong fit or overqualified.
• The Published Job Description Doesn't Describe An Individual Hiring Manager's Current Needs: First, it's critical to understand that at any employer large enough to have an HR person, the hiring manager rarely wrote?the job description. Instead, they are written by HR to describe many similar jobs, a year or more before the job is advertised, because this provides better employer protection against HR lawsuits/gov't actions. Hiring managers realize this and communicate their current needs to the recruiter just after the ad is posted ... and their current needs are usually >50% different than the published job description.

It's critical to prove impact and success to employers, especially when you're over 40 and perceived to be more expensive. It's the number one reason that age 40+ candidates lose opportunities they're qualified for ... because they were more expensive and failed to prove that they were worth the added expense (or anything more that they read an outdated job description).

You would have already been successfully proving impact and success to employers, and your age 40, 50, and 60+ job search would be going much faster, you'd be getting better quality interviews, and have multiple offers to choose from.
