Age 40, 50 or 60+? Turn Your Job Search Ageism Problems Into Opportunities

Age 40, 50 or 60+? Turn Your Job Search Ageism Problems Into Opportunities

If you're an over 40 job seeker, you're probably seeing some type of job search ageism.

You've been excluded from opportunities when you were qualified, didn't advance after great interviews, been a finalist but weren't chosen, saw less qualified and experienced candidates win the role, or been told that you're overqualified.

You probably can't figure out why employers would want to hire someone less qualified, less experienced. You can't see what you need to change in order to change your results.

You can't see why employers can't see that you're awesome ...

If you address these job search ageism problems in the right light, you can turn them into opportunities:

  • Problem - Employers Do Want Skills,?Responsibilities?and Experience, But It's The Bare Minimum Of What They Want:?Employers get many candidates with similar skills, responsibilities and experience, so they form the minimum of what the hiring manger wants. That's why hiring managers perceive candidates with similar skills, responsibilities and experience as commodities, seeking to obtain them at the lowest cost possible.
  • Opportunity - Instead, Focus On Impact:?When you distinguish yourself through impact contributions, you'll stand out as a cost-effective investment in comparison to the huge impact you can deliver?. Better yet, almost no job seekers focus on impact effectively in resumes or interviews.

  • Problem - Employers See Little Value In The Things You Can Do (But They Don't Need):?Because most job seekers do a brain dump at the beginning of resumes and interviews, they communicate that they have a whole lot of skills and ask "Do You Need Any Of Them?". Even for generalist positions, hiring managers choose candidate who understand their current individual problems and have solved similar problems, rather than job seekers who present random traits.
  • Opportunity - Show Employers "I Have What You Need":?Instead, show each hiring manager that you have what they need, by demonstrating that you understand their individual current key/priority problems and that you've solved similar challenges.

These are just a couple of examples of common job search ageism problems that can be turned into opportunities. You'd already be incorporating these opportunities in to your resume, interview and job search strategies, but no one has taught you how. That's about to change tonight ...

Ideally, hiring managers want an internal referral from a current employee for their job opening. Your job as a job seeker is to 1) research to find their problems 2) craft an action plan to solve one of those problems 3) get a trusted employee to submit your resume, cover letter and your action plan to the hiring manager/decision maker at your target company. Hiring managers have a problem. You must show that you are their problem solver through sharing your action plan. This approach shows your keen interest in the company and your desire to partner with them in solving their problems. #hiringmanager #problemsolving #jobseeker #internalreferral #actionplan

So, Phil Rosenberg, would you say then that it's more important for someone 40+ to be a specialist vs. a generalist?
