Agate and Andaman back arc basin.

#Agate #Andaman

A few days ago , witnessed this polished Agate at a prestigious museum and immediately my light bulbs flashed. Connectivity made. While Alcock and Sewell were marine explorers few hundred years back, they never knew that the seamounts named after them in Andaman basin duly discovered and pointed out by them would raise eyebrows through several scientific papers and now, a polished Agate(!), if you buy this piece. This polished Agate reminded me of the Alcock and Sewell seamounts in Andaman backarc basin and the papers written by Joseph Curray(2005) , KAK Raju(2004.2006) and Pritam Jha et al(2008,2010,2011).The Agate was linked in my mind to the spreading centre just opening (4my? Raju said?) between the two seamounts.

Any bathymetric map, geological map and some published data display the present positions of the seamounts and the spreading centre. What we see in the Agate is the relative perceived position of the seamounts at beginning of the sea floor spreading.

As they say, "nature repeats itself in a variety of ways ". Also, the mind sees what it wants to see!
