Kickstart a positive interaction

Executive coach Yasmine Khater, CSP shares three psychological theories of why sending thank you notes is a crucial habit to develop if you wish to have a successful career.

Yasmine Khater, an executive coach from Singapore

?? The reciprocity principle: Ever heard of “you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours”? Psychologist Robert Cialdini found that when someone does something nice for us, we feel an obligation to return the favour. By sending a thank-you note, you're kickstarting a positive interaction.

?? Positive reinforcement: We all love a pat on the back, don't we? A thank-you note reinforces the idea that you value the opportunity and the time spent by the hiring team. This positive reinforcement can leave a lasting impression.

?? The halo effect: Think of this as a sort of professional glow-up. Our impression of a person influences how we perceive their character. A thoughtful thank-you note can create a positive "halo" around your image.

Sending a thank you after an interview is a strategic move that taps into fundamental human behaviours, she adds.

Make it meaningful?

Besides exhibiting your professionalism and commitment towards the opportunity, you would want to continue to build the relationship, says 莎曼勃士 .?

Samantha Ng, career futurist from Singapore

She suggests three tips to make a thank-you note more meaningful :

???? Personalise it: Provide a quick summary of the conversation, and highlight specific portions of the interview such as a discussion topic that was memorable and engaging for all parties. This can show that you were actively listening during the interview.

?? Reiterate interest: Express your continued interest in the role and mention how your skills will align with their needs.?

? Address concerns: If there is any concern or question that you think you need further clarification on, address them briefly in the email and provide additional information.

Craft it, don’t clone it

Ex-banker turned storyteller Anna Ong recollects thanking a CEO and his team after an interview and getting a job thereafter.

She suggests a few tips for crafting an unforgettable thank-you note , based on her personal experience:

?? Quick turnaround: Send that thank-you note within 24 hours. Show them you’re not just keen, you’re on the ball.

?? Be authentic: Remember those little moments in the interview that made you smile or think? Mention them. Show you were there, not just physically but mentally too.

??? Address the elephants: Made a blunder like leaving business cards behind? Use your thank-you note as a lifeline to smooth things over.

?? Get to the point but make it count: Be concise, but make every word earn its place. Reiterate why you’re the right fit without sounding like a broken record.

? Meticulous attention: It’s your last shot at impressing them; don’t let a typo trip you up.

?? Interviewed with multiple people? A cookie-cutter thank-you won’t do. Tailor each note to reflect your unique interactions with each person.

It’s an opportunity to network

“One is not likely to get offers from every interview. Sometimes it is about timing and opportunity ,” says banker Kenneth Goh .

“The industry is small. You never know when you might encounter the person whom you have interviewed before. That person might be your direct supervisor or a senior person in the same company one day. Maintaining warm relationships is how one can get things done in the workplace,” he adds.

Nigh on 20 years in recruitment has definitely proven to me that the little things matter when applying and interviewing for jobs. To be able to present yourself as professional and with people skills, a thank you email is a powerful tool. ? Write the perfect thank you email with these tips and you are sure to leave an impression- ? 1. Do not use ChatGPT: As tempting as it might be, avoid using any AI generative tools. You want to write this from the heart! 2. Share one takeaway: Include one prominent learning or takeaway from your interview, this helps make you memorable. 3. Be appropriately prompt: Send the email to your interviewer within 24 hours, but avoid doing it immediately. This helps to cement your interest in the role and leaves a lasting impression on them. 4. Proofread: Remember to make no grammatical or spelling errors at all, especially the interviewer’s name (can be a huge let down). 5. No fillers/fluff words: Brevity is often preferred to overly wordy emails. #gethired #gethirednow

Here are some tips to write a thank you email after an interview: 1. Write within 24 hours after the interview. Not an immediate one right after the interview, and no longer than a day because it is already obsolete. 2. Keep it simple and direct. The interviewer might have interview many candidates besides us; so a long email won't get a chance to being read. 3. Say thanks and looking forward to hear the update, to show that we are interested in the position and company. 4. Be authentic and be ourself. In the end, it is not the best one who are hired. Instead, is the most-fit between the company and the talent.
