Interesting and upsetting at the same time.
Earlier today, I went into a coffee shop to do some work, and I happened to sit on the table next to these 2 guys, where one of them was getting insulted for his Sales ability.
It really upset me hearing some of the stuff that his boss was saying to him such as:
- I don't think you are capable enough to achieve your targets
- I feel you have lost your motivation and I don't think you will perform as expected
- What do you want to do, you are a lovely guy but this is business
- I am leaving this in your hands and I am happy with what you decide
- Do you feel there is someone else to blame for the targets or was it just you to blame
The young man was just taking some corporate bullets and it felt like a complete set-up. The young man was not getting a chance to speak. I honestly felt like saying to his boss, who's ego was sky high to have a cup of shut the hell up! If you seem to be so good, why don't you try doing his job, its easy to sit down pin point others mistake, what strategies did you implement to help/motivate him or support him?
I was waiting for his boss to go, so I can offer the young man a cup of coffee and to motivate him a bit, as he looked very down, but he had left with his boss.
My advice to business owners who like acting like a boss and not a leader are:
- Act like a leader and lead by example
- Never insult someones ability
- Is your attitude the real reason as to why your team is not performing? It's easy to blame others, but look at what you may be doing wrong
- If your employees are not hitting targets, rather than trying to lure them out, place strategies to motivate or help them
- Find out the reasons as to why they are not performing - are they going through a bad patch in their life, do they require some additional support
- Rather than sitting and picking out their weakness, help them improve on them
- Why is their a problem in not selling, could it be your product or service? What could you do better to sell it? What is the feedback from potential consumers when your sales people are trying to sell to them
- Act like a team player and get involved with selling it as well, rather than waiting for the end of month or week, just to listen to how he/she has performed
- Show your employees the bigger picture, but break the bigger picture up into a small jigsaw that are achievable targets leading upto to a complete picture
- Work together towards a solution and never look down on someone
- Is it down to your culture and values of your company?
Good employees don't come in to work for 'money', they want to be enjoying what they do, the environment, the culture and the way they are treated. Good employees don't stay for long, as soon as they find a better opportunity they will move on. Now, as a business you are going to lose massively in time and costs in recruiting or replacing that person. You rather invest in your staff, than to please your ego at the time!
Remember, what goes around comes around and you could be in that position one day! Life is a test, remain humble and respect everyone around you!
