After quiet quitting, here is quiet hiring
The new buzzword of 2022’s second half was quiet quitting, also known as doing only the minimum job requirements, without extra time, effort or even enthusiasm. Many responded with a sarcastic “quiet firing” which means making a job unrewarding enough to make quiet quitters resign.
But let us introduce you to a new perspective: quiet hiring.
Emily Rose McRae from Gartner has talked about companies freezing hiring or even laying off employees as a result of the economic changes of 2022 (expected to continue in 2023), but the need for new roles is still apparent. The answer is quiet hiring, also known as hiring without hiring.
There are two solutions under quiet hiring:
External hiring is the renaissance of the well-known HR solution: outsourcing. This could mean using contractors, agencies and outsourced workforce in crucial roles that need immediate placement. Project-based thinking is the main point here. Contactors also benefit from it as they can break into new industries.
Internal quiet hiring means filling in the most crucial roles and business functions with current employees, while also keeping employees’ career path and benefits in mind. Employees will temporarily stop working in their past role.
There is some understandable tension in using quiet hiring but sometimes thinking outside the box is important to keep the business alive. Transparent communication and keeping employees valued make the changes more acceptable. Managers can shed lights on the fact that the goal is keeping the company alive until everything can go back to the normal setup.
