After The Podcast Tips - The Transcript

A popular expression suggests, “If you build it, they will come.” It is true having something versus nothing increases your chances of success. However, it doesn’t guarantee success. So how does this apply to podcasting? Who is responsible for promoting an interview, the guest, or the interviewer? The obvious answer is both. Interestingly, not all guests on a podcast take full advantage of an interview. One best practice is to transcribe an interview. Technology has made it much easier to have an interview transcribed in seconds. Tools like Grammarly.com have speeded up the process of cleaning the interview up and making it more readable. However, you will still need to go back and review the transcript manually.?Add pictures to make it look pretty. A picture is equivalent to 1,000 words. Transcripts are full of keywords that are picked up by search engines. Share the interview on your website and social channels. Moreover, bits and pieces of the interview can be used in your social media efforts. For a small fee, Franchise Interviews has performed this service for our previous guests. Here is a transcribed interview I did with the Telephone Doctor, Nancy Friedman.
A Tale of Two Doctors
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Hello, hello, hello. It's Nancy Friedman. I have a name for my program now. It's called Noon with Nancy. So, most of my recordings will be done at room temperature, at noon, with no editing. So, this is what you see is what you get, which is part of Noon with Nancy. And yes, I have a special guest. And I would love to say how many of you have ever seen or met this beautiful man. You are a good-looking stud.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Thank you. Likewise.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Am I a good-looking stud?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - A good-looking woman.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Okay, thank you. We have Marty McDermott, professor, author, podcaster, etc. I am going to play Larry King, Marty. Okay. Which I, you know, envied him as a broadcaster.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, likewise.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I saw so many of his interviews, and he always told the person, “I didn’t go into your background. I want you to tell me.” Because some people are so scripted when they go back. What I know about you is the, you know, five or six interviews that you've done with me and your podcast, which at the moment, Franchise Interviews.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, that's right.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Yours are always obviously very interesting. However, we've never seen your face.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes. I think that's why I went into podcasting.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Oh, you have a face for radio. Okay. I know a little bit enough to be dangerous about you. I have a bunch of questions. Yes. And you can feel free to let everybody know.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - And, ladies and gentlemen, his podcasts are not as blunt as this, but he goes deep into your background and finds out things you forgot about yourself.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I'm just the opposite. So, you know, we've been friends for years.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I appreciate it.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - It's interesting, Nancy, because I remember you mentioned the entire Larry King thing. I found that interesting that he didn't know much about his guests, and I followed two spectacular interviewers. And I hate to mention his name sometimes because he had a bit of controversy, but Charlie Rose was a fantastic interviewer.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - You're right on both.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, and I did this; I only did this once in about 800 interviews. James Lipton.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - No, you're way ahead of me; I got that down.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Okay.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Okay. It's one of my questions, but we both adored James Lipton. Okay, so without telling us the year, we always like to know when, you know, per first question. So, we want the month and the day you were born.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - March, which makes me a Pisces.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I don't know too much about Pisces.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I don't know, either. I was never big on the sign thing because sometimes you stereotype people. And it's funny, Nancy, because I've met other Pisces, and sometimes they're opposite to my personality. You know what I mean? So, I need to find out how much truth there is behind the whole sign concept. But it's still fun, nevertheless.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - It's always a conversation starter.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - It is; I agree with that.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - That's a good one for you who are still dating, out in the dating field. You probably know; God knows what they're talking about now.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Right, that's true.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - And I know you're on the East Coast, but where were you born, Marty?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Okay, so I was born in Brooklyn, New York. And my sister was born in Brooklyn, New York. And then, my parents decided to move; they wanted to get out of the city. We were raised in New Jersey, actually, in several different places in New Jersey, mostly Sayreville, New Jersey. Are you familiar with Sayreville, New Jersey? It was a very blue-collar industrial town. There were a lot of factories there and things like that. And it was a great place to grow up. But Brooklyn became my second home because usually, every weekend or every other weekend, we would go back to Brooklyn and visit my cousins and grandparents. And I haven't been back to Brooklyn since COVID, Nancy. So yes, I miss that place a lot.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Many people haven't been anywhere since COVID.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, exactly. So, raised in New Jersey. And then eventually, my wife and I moved out to Easton, Pennsylvania. So that's where I am now. And I love it here. It's such a beautiful place. Have you ever been to Easton before?
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I've been to Philadelphia. So, if you're surrounded if one of the suburbs of Philadelphia, it would be; I have a friend who lives in Ardmore. Am I saying that right?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Okay, sure, yes. We're not far from Philly. We're about, well, about 55 miles from Philadelphia. So, we're north of Philadelphia. We're right on the Delaware River. So, if I took a kayak all the way down, I would hit Philadelphia. Pennsylvania is such a big state. We're about 300 miles from Pittsburgh and about 70 miles from New York.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - And poorly maligned, like St. Louis and Missouri is poorly maligned sometimes. And people who don't like it probably have never been here. Or here's what I don't find funny. Hi, have you ever been to St. Louis? Yes, I was at the airport once. How can you say that? People tell me. I have been to the airport because it's not a pretty sight if you go to the airport in New Jersey. It's not.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Right. Newark, New Jersey.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Right. But if you go into, and Dick and I have, going into the trees and the beauty of New Jersey, that's beautiful. So, Easton must be just as nice. And traveling to Brooklyn, where is the furthest you've traveled in your life, and your tours?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Wow, that's a great question. So, the furthest I've traveled, Nancy, was Athens, Greece. I wrote a paper in, oh God; I can't even remember what year it was, Nancy. It was like 2010, and I submitted it to a conference, and they invited me to speak about the paper. Of course, the paper was on franchising, by the way.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - We're going to get into the franchise part.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, we will. We'll get into that. So, the organization I was working for at the time sent me out to Athens, Greece, and I was terrified, quite frankly, because I went out there by myself. I couldn't speak the language. And I found Greece very difficult to get around, quite frankly. I found that many people didn't speak English.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Do they have boats to take you around wherever you want?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - They do, but I was in a part where it was more of a collegiate atmosphere, you know, I was presenting at a university. So that's the furthest away I've been from home. Yes, and it was the closest I've ever been to – my mom is from Tunis, Tunisia, so that's the closest I've ever been to Tunis, Tunisia. I didn't make it there, but I keep saying someday I'll visit.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I'm sure you will. You mentioned it's like you saw my notes and didn't.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I didn't. We know each other so well.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I don't give notice to my questions.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I know.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Because if you have something to ask me or I have something to ask you, I want it to be off the cuff and from the heart. So, for those who don't know, and most of you know Marty from his podcast interviews, he's got a spectacular background and career. How did you get into franchising? Tell us about that.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Wow, that's a great story Okay. So, like a lot of the things in my life, it happened by accident, or it was divine intervention. You could say either one. But I was working in Manhattan, Nancy for a company called Venture Direct Worldwide and I was selling online advertising. Now this is back in 1999. Online advertising was something new and big, like selling banners and things like that. People didn't even know what it was.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Didn't want it.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes. Exactly. And I was responsible for a website. It was called the Be Your Own Boss Forum. It was like a business opportunity website; there are different business opportunities. And a good client for this website would be franchisers. So, there was a franchise show; in the old days, they used to call it the Jacob Javits Center.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Right, right, what is it now?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - They refer to it as the Javits Center. So, if you say Jacob Javits, people think you're old. I still call it Jacob Javits. So, I went to my first franchise show, and I was shocked and surprised because I was expecting to see KFC and McDonald's, you know, and all the big names and food franchises. But when I got there, I was surprised that all these different franchises existed. There were printing franchises and shoe repair franchises. I mean, you name it, they had it. And this whole concept fascinated me. So, I got this directory. It was called the Bond's directory. It listed all the franchisers, and I called every one of them and started getting advertisers on the website.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Smart.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes. Something exciting happened to me because we were looking to drive traffic to this website, the Be Your Own Boss forum, and I found this website on the internet. It kept coming up. It was called FranchiseAmerica.com. And so, they kept coming up number one in Google but had no advertisers. So, I called the company's owner and said, “You know what, we should talk; I can help you.” We talked for two or three weeks and agreed that I would own part of a company if I left Venture Direct. And so I did. I left the company. And so I became a business owner or an entrepreneur. And my parents were very upset with me. You know, they said, are you crazy? They said, well, what about medical benefits? What about 401k? None of that, but I just believed in the concept. So, Franchise America was one of the very first franchise websites on the internet. And over time, there was more and more and more, and there became like 50 or 60 of them. So, we ended up selling the company to a competitor. And so I was out of the franchise business and missed it so much that what happened was I started taking classes at Fairleigh Dickinson University. I was going for what was called a Post-MBA in Entrepreneurial Studies. And after I finished that, I started writing a newsletter on franchising. It was just a regular newsletter. Like you have your newsletter, which I subscribe to.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - And you read them.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I do read them. You can, you can tell. But something interesting happened after about a year of writing the newsletter. I got a phone call from one of my subscribers. And he said, Marty, I subscribe to your newsletter, and this would make a great podcast. And in 2005, I didn't even know what a podcast was then, and I declined the offer. I said it was flattering. I said thanks, but no thanks. And my wife Conni told me, why don't you try it and see if you like it? And I tried it, and I, you know, I've been hooked ever since.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - It's addictive.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - It's been so much fun. It's provided so many opportunities for me. I would never know someone like yourself if it wasn't for the podcast. It's just changed my life without sounding overdramatic, but in so many ways, I've interviewed some amazing people that I still can't believe I've interviewed over the years. And I love it. I'm still hooked on it. I get just as much joy today doing an interview Nancy as I did from my first interview.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I believe it. And you know, kudos to you. Our friend Jack Monson listed you as one of the top franchise podcasts. So, congratulations.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Thank you. That was very flattering because I'm a fan of Jack.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I have to get back to him. I must bend my knees and be ready to kiss the ring. I did something he didn't care for, and he was going to band me, but he didn't. Okay, but I did something I found funny. It's good to tell you that two people don't always have the same sense of humor. I will ask Jack if I have permission to tell this story. I found it funny. Yes. He did not. I don't want to lose him as a friend. And you're a Professor Purdue University in the global division.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes. And so, I've been with Purdue University Global now; God, it's been almost five years. And it's been wonderful working with Purdue.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - And you're working with the kids?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - That's a great question because our students are different than the typical college student, like 18, 19, or 20 years old. Our average student at Purdue University Global, Nancy; there are more women than men. I think we have 60% females, 40% males, and the average age, I believe, is 34 at our school.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I could go there.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, exactly. And we have students of all ages.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - On this side, I could go there; on that side, I couldn't.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - It's wonderful, Nancy because I think about the last 20 years of my life, you know, I was doing the podcast. I've been teaching online now for almost 20 years. What you see here, I mean, I never have to leave home if I don't want to.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - What do you teach? If somebody wanted to enroll, what does Marty teach?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - So I teach marketing, marketing management, digital marketing, social media marketing, and really anything pertaining to marketing. I love the topic of marketing. I have a doctorate in marketing. I started my bachelor's in marketing and then finished my doctorate.

NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - You have so many letters after your name. I need help seeing what your real name is.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Exactly. So, yes, and I love teaching the topic. We use Zoom for our classes too. I just started using Zoom, and I like it. I'm getting used to it.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - It is very addictive. As I think I told you from my on-site programs, I got sidelined because of underlying health issues, and the doctors don't want me to travel and be with people. So I'm stuck with Dick Friedman, which is not so terrible, but we're trapped. I would make him say hello to you. The Zoom programs have flourished; you should be very good at them. You appear very well on it. You have Jack; what the hell's his name?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Oh, Jack Nicholson (LOL).
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Nicholson, there it is. I will take us off franchising for a moment because one thing we really clicked on, and you already mentioned, was Actor's Studio.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I say friend because you talk about wanting to be someone's friend; it was James Lipton, who died a couple of years ago.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, he did. At the start of COVID.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Yes. I love that because there was no script.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes...What an amazing man he was. I mean, how he just interviewed people. Because he was so passionate, wasn't he?
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - He was passionate, and he knew what he was talking about.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - This notion brings me to the fact that when we see actors today on Late Night who are asked a simple question, they give a yes or no. Right. They don't have a script. Actors need scripts.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, they do.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Dick always says these poor souls can't hold a normal conversation with a guest host other than saying yes or no. And you know who I was surprised at that? Did you see the HBO special on Paul Newman and his wife, Joanne Woodward?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I didn't see it. I would like to see it.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Yes, it's awesome.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Is it really? Oh my gosh.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - And I fell in love with him all over again. However, he could have been a better guest to have. And he was a very private man.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Right. Paul Newman was private. You know, it's funny because I didn't see James Lipton's interview with Paul Newman. I think he did. It could be in the older interviews.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I'll have to look it up.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, I'll have to look it up too. But I remember when James Lipton interviewed Robert De Niro, I was surprised at Robert De Niro, how shy he was during the interview.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Do you think it's shy, or is it a DNA thing that I can read a script, act, and win an award, but I don't know how to hold a conversation?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - That could be what it is, too. That's an interesting question.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I don't know. I've never met him. I've worked with some good stars, blah, blah, blah.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Right.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I love that we could talk about James Lipton because I have known a long time. But I suggest you find him on YouTube, and you can see anybody you would like to see interviewed. He did them all, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - He was, like Marty says, just so interested and passionate. And I don't even think he wrote those. He just probably did, scripted.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, and so I stole some of his style into the podcast. I would never compare myself or put him on my level. But I always try to, no matter whom I'm interviewing, Nancy, get as excited as possible about that person. I cheat a little because I do a little background information first. You know what I mean?
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - And I like to be surprised, but both have value.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Exactly, and it doesn't matter. It works both ways. You know, I've seen it done both ways. For me, it's more comfortable to do it that way. But I like this format, in any case.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - You do not have A.D.D., so I understand my husband's not A.D.D.; he would do exactly what you do. I know what you're passionate about most, and that's your beautiful family.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes, thank you.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Tell us a little bit of what you can about Conni. It's just so fun to hear people get excited about their family. And so, to say, I got two kids and a wife, and we live in a house.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Right, thanks for asking because you're right. It shows how well you know me, Nancy, because it's funny, because if people ever ask me about things like, what are your hobbies and things like that? My hobby is spending as much time with Conni and Martin as possible. Martin's been off this summer. He's going back to school in a couple of weeks.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - How old is he now?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - So he's 14 now. He's going to be 15 in October.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I met you when he was 7 or 8.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I think so, yes. I mean, he was just a little boy. And I told you the story. I named him after my dad, who was also Martin. So, he's Martin, and my grandfather was Martin. My great-grandfather was Martin, and as far as I know, right, so the story goes, he's like the seventh Martin Joseph McDermott out there. So, he has a lot of pressure now to have a son if he has children, you know, to continue the name.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - You know, if he wants to or Martinetta.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Sure, exactly. That's another option, too. So, I told him whether he wanted to carry on the tradition was his decision. I won't hold him to it. That's totally up to him.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - We've got about five more minutes left. I want to ask you a couple more questions, and you should add that I just remembered I should have asked. Yes. I'm going to guess, and I could be wrong, that you're more of a book reader than a TV watcher. Wow, you're good. Well, I didn't know any, any, I haven't been a little angel on your back. So the best book you've recently read, fiction or nonfiction?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Well, there's a book I'm reading right now that I'm just into, and it's called Abundance. And I forgot the author's name. I also just got it on Audible recently. But it talks about, there's so much negativity in the world today, Nancy. I know you're a very positive person, particularly at Telephone Doctor; you have a very positive environment there. It looks at the future as the glass is half full instead of half empty. Because you hear a lot of the reports, they say, okay, the economy is not so good, and things aren't going to be so great, there's not going to be much growth.
What attracted me to the book was that he talks about all the opportunities that are going to take place, that we're going to be able to solve hunger one day, and one day we're going to be able to have maybe cars that run on water or something like that. It's a very optimistic book. So that's one book that I'm into right now. Interesting. Yes, so, and I like that stuff too. You know, I like to read books, mostly on business. I don't want to say it's boring reading, but...
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - No, it's not boring. I just introduced my husband to one thing on TV, but he is just a constant reader and life-long learner. He's big on sales books, as I'm sure you are too. Yes. You have yet to see or read; the author is Chris Voss, V-O-S-S. Okay. It's called Never Split the Difference. And he was a former FBI hostage negotiator. And the book, I don't have it in front of me; everything's underlined and starved. It applies to life.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Very well written. If you're interested in that sort of thing, and to our audience, too. Yes, absolutely. Have you ever written a book, Marty?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Well, okay. So, I guess I could almost officially announce on your show today that I just recently started writing a book. And it was funny because you and I, I don't know if you remember, we had a conversation about this, maybe three years ago, four years ago. You said to me do it, you know, is that's what that was your advice to me so just do it you know because you've written all these books you know and I've always said how did you do that? It's just such an accomplishment to write a book. I've been published in journal articles and things like that and it's great.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - But it's more is more concise writing a book. Take all your journals and put them into a book.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Into a book. Unfortunately, the journals own the copyright on them, so I can't do it. But right, right. So, I'm in the process of writing it. I find it very fun and motivates me, but it's very challenging at the same time.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Well, when you're done, it will be most rewarding.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I think so.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Quick question here. We have not met you're sitting down. How tall are you?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Not as tall as you think. I'm five-ten and a half exactly, so sometimes I'll say five-eleven.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Okay, I won't ask you about your weight.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I won't tell you that.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - You are so much fun. Believe it or not, this interview is almost half an hour, which I tried for 15 minutes, but look at you. My last question is, is there one question you wish I had asked? I wish you'd asked me this because I got something to say about it. And it's either yes or no is good at this point.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I can't think of anything, Nancy. You know, it was nice that you told me that there weren't going to be any scripted questions or anything like that. You know what I mean? That's why I was so excited for this interview. If I had those questions, I would have over-prepped. You see, it's just that person in me that says, okay, what am I going to say? I just learned something from you by doing this. That an interview can go in many different directions, can't it?
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - It can be fun. You're like me; you're inquisitive. If you're a podcaster or an inquisitive interviewer, and I am naturally inquisitive when people say they did something, why did you do that? Nobody's ever questioned them about that. How did you do that? Right. Anyway, you are a good friend. Did you dress up for me, or is this just for you?
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I dressed up just for you. Yes, I did. I said, you know what, this is so important because I've always wanted you to have a podcast, and I want it to be so successful because I would listen to every podcast you did. I find you to be – I think I mentioned this to you a while back because I've always found – and I know because you were an actress or actor, I don't know what the term is today, but you were an actress in your day.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I was in theatre.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - In theater, right? And I've always been drawn to those people for some reason, even though I always say I don't have an ounce of talent when it comes to acting or anything like that, I've always found people like yourself interesting, like I'm drawn to you like a magnet. I'm maybe not the same personality, but find you fascinating, you know, and everything you say.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - You're very kind. I will tell you that theater opened my eyes to so much. And if I could be the queen of the world, I would make every child in grade school and high school, and college take a theater course.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - Yes.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Everything in theater applies to sales. Everything in theater applies to life. From listening skills to eye contact, I mean just so much. And in fact, I wrote a book; I wrote an article. Yes. You know, theater should, I'll repost that.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - I might have read that article Nancy. I do read; I do read your newsletters. There are so many that I couldn't possibly read all of them. I'm a fan.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - Likewise, my friend. Thank you. It's been a joy. And tell people where you can be reached if they need you. You're all over the Internet. Sure. Yes.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS - If you go to FranchiseInterviews.com, Nancy, we have every interview we've ever done, from interview number one until our most recent interview. So, there are about 750 to 800 different interviews you can listen to up to this point. Many people ask me they say okay, what's the benchmark? How far do you want to go? I've always said at least 1,000, meaning I have several more years.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR - I don't know if you can put this up there, but I'd be happy if you did. We will post you, and good things will likely happen.
MARTIN MCDERMOTT OF FRANCHISE INTERVIEWS That's wonderful. This interview has been so much fun.
NANCY FRIEDMAN - THE TELEPHONE DOCTOR – You are a good friend, and I like you very much.
