What Bestseller Were You Reading Back Then?
The Bonfire of The Vanities - Tom Wolfe, October, 1987
"The novel relates the fall of Sherman McCoy, an investment banker making a million a year who seems blind to everything except appearances, sex and money. He lives in the middle of New York City without knowing New York City. He seems barely to know his decorative wife, his decorative daughter or his libidinous mistress, to say nothing of himself. He's all surface is Sherman, and when he blunders off the expressway into the welfare jungle of the South Bronx in his $48,000 Mercedes, into the biggest trouble of his heretofore charmed life, he is without reserves of experience, imagination or moral awareness with which to guide himself. All he's got is adrenalin and fear, fear and adrenalin. He's a sort of carefully bred white rat in Dr. Wolfe's urban laboratory of horrors, destined to run mazes and endure shocks for our edification and amusement." - The New York Times Book Review Desk
A Brief History of Time - Stephen Hawking, March, 1988
"A Brief History Of Time is Stephen Hawking’s way of explaining the most complex concepts and ideas of physics, such as space, time, black holes, planets, stars and gravity to the average Joe, so that even you and I can better understand how our planet was created, where it came from, and where it’s going." - Four Minute Books
Christine, Stephen King, April, 1983
"A love triangle involving 17-year-old misfit Arnie Cunningham, his new girlfriend and a haunted 1958 Plymouth Fury. Dubbed Christine by her previous owner, Arnie's first car is jealous, possessive and deadly." - StephenKing.com
In Search of Excellence, Tom Peters and Robert Waterman, 1982
"A "New York Times" Bestseller for over three years To discover the secrets of the art of management, Peters and Waterman studied more than 43 successful American companies. The companies specialized in a number of areas: consumer goods, high technology, and services. What he discovered was that regardless of how different each company was, they shared eight basic principles of management that anyone can use on their way to success. Here they are, amply illustrated with anecdotes and examples from the experiences of the best-run companies in the world." - Goodreads
The Bourne Identity, Robert Ludlum, February, 1980

Iacocca: An Autobiography is the fascinating story of Lee Iacocca, a business legend. He helped shape Ford into the number two US auto maker and then saved Chrysler from going out of business. Noble House, James Clavell, April, 1981
"The setting is Hong Kong, 1963. The action spans scarcely more than a week, but these are days of high adventure: from kidnapping and murder to financial double-dealing and natural catastrophes–fire, flood, landslide. Yet they are days filled as well with all the mystery and romance of Hong Kong–the heart of Asia–rich in every trade…money, flesh, opium, power." - From The Publisher

6 年The 80s -- such a great decade for music with way too many fantastic artists and songs to mention, but for me the following capture some of the zeitgeist of that time period: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YkADj0TPrJA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVrELhxOFnM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuN6gs0AJls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djV11Xbc914 Enjoy!

6 年I am really a decadeless child. Was too young in the 70s to claim it as my own, too clueless to lay claim to the 80s, and I got married in the early 90s!? Still, I lay claim to the 70s for my own.? Everything that happened in my childhood happened in 1978, although, I love Cyndi Lauper still to this day.? Guess which one is me...

6 年Great compilation. What about Stripes? Did I miss Top Gun? I think of Charlie's Angels as 1970s, though.
