Africa’s Energy Sector Poised for Transformation in 2025; B2Gold Advances Carbon Footprint Reduction with Solar Power Integration and More...

The African energy sector is on the brink of significant transformation in 2025, driven by major investments in renewable energy, hydropower, oil production, regional grid integration, and sustainability-focused initiatives.

Mining giant B2Gold has taken significant steps to decarbonize its operations by integrating solar energy and battery storage systems (BESS) at its mining sites. The recently commissioned 6MW solar facility at the Otjikoto mine in Namibia, which includes a battery storage component, now supplies approximately 13% of the mine’s power needs.

Voltalia has been selected by the Tunisian government for the 139-megawatt Menzel Habib solar project in the Gabès region, southeast Tunisia, following its success with the Sagdoud project last May. The future solar plant will generate energy equivalent to the annual consumption of over 620,000 residents, while reducing CO2 emissions by 360,000 tonnes annually.

South Africa’s Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, made a significant announcement during the year’s final Energy Action Plan briefing in Tshwane. Dr. Ramokgopa revealed the eight preferred bidders for the seventh bid window of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) and the second bid window of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP).
