AWHPI GLOBAL FOUNDATION Receives UN ECOSOC Special Consultative Status

New York, NY, June 30, 2023 - The African Women's Health Project International (AWHPI) GLOBAL FOUNDATION, a non-governmental organization that works to improve the health and well-being of African women and girls, announced today that it has been granted special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

Consultative status with ECOSOC is a prestigious recognition that enables NGOs to participate in the work of the United Nations, such as delivering oral presentations, submitting written statements, attending meetings and events, and collaborating with other NGOs and UN agencies on issues related to economic and social development, human rights, peace and security, and humanitarian affairs.

"We are honored and delighted to receive this status, and work on the 17 sustainable development goals (SDG2030) of the UN, which reflects our commitment and contribution to advancing the health and rights of African women and girls," said HRH Princess Dr. Moradeun Ogunlana, Founder and President of AWHPI GLOBAL FOUNDATION. "We look forward to working closely with the UN and its partners to amplify the voices and needs of our beneficiaries and to advocate for policies and programs that promote their empowerment and dignity."

AWHPI GLOBAL FOUNDATION was established in 2003 as a non-profit organization based in the United States, with branches in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa. Its mission is to provide quality health care services, education, advocacy, and research for African women and girls.

Some of its activities include:

- Through a strong global network and coalition of partners, AWHPI dedicates its efforts towards ensuring that every women and girl has equitable access to the basic human right to health.

- AWHPI focuses on several strategic pillars to drive its mission including addressing the shortage of resources through donations and supply of medical services and equipment to support the most vulnerable, driving advocacy, outreach and public awareness about women’s health and related issues.

- Providing free medical screenings, counseling, treatment, and referrals for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Training community health workers and peer educators on HIV prevention and care

- Organizing awareness campaigns on sexual and reproductive health rights, family planning, maternal health, cervical cancer, female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), and child marriage. Distributing sanitary pads, condoms, and hygiene kits to schoolgirls and women in rural areas

- Conducting research on the health status and needs of African women and girls

AWHPI GLOBAL FOUNDATION joins 4,483 other NGOs that have special consultative status with ECOSOC as of August 2021. There are also 141 NGOs that have general consultative status and 967 that have roster status. The consultative status is granted by ECOSOC upon the recommendation of its Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, which reviews new applications twice a year.
