AI Fest set to empower African Startups

Microsoft hosted the inaugural African Startups AI Fest in June 2024, in Johannesburg, South Africa, with virtual access. The event aimed to inspire startups in utilising AI-powered tech solutions to accelerate market entry through Microsoft's support programs, including tailored resources, webinars, pitch coaching, and investor connections

BYD and Ampersand electrify Africa

A groundbreaking partnership between BYD and Ampersand will boost the development of electric motorbikes in Africa. This will help Ampersand rapidly expand its electric fleet and charging infrastructure. The shift to electric vehicles, not only reduces carbon emissions but also saves drivers money on fuel and maintenance costs, ultimately improving lives and driving economic growth in Africa.

Opportunity in Africa’s e-waste challenge

Africa is facing a growing e-waste crisis, with 3 million tons of electronic waste dumped on the continent annually. This toxic influx poses serious health challenges to local communities, including respiratory problems and neurological disorders. However, this crisis presents opportunities for startups to develop innovative solutions in e-waste management and sustainable recycling technologies. By tapping into this lucrative market, startups can promote sustainable development, create jobs, and address a pressing environmental issue.

Cybersecurity breach at Flutterwave

Flutterwave, a prominent Nigerian fintech, faced a major breach resulting in an alleged loss of ?11 billion ($27 million). While the exact cause of the breach is still unknown, there are suspicions of a potential vulnerability within Flutterwave's internal systems designed to protect and oversee its operations. This event should be a lesson for startups and investors to prioritize robust cybersecurity measures and continuous monitoring to safeguard against potential breaches and financial losses.
