The African Peace Mission: A Series of Unfortunate Events!
Although, the African Peace Mission faced its fair share of “eish” moments, it was not all doom and gloom. Our African leaders showed resilience and determination in the face of adversity. They proved that even in the midst of a series of unfortunate events, their commitment to peace remained unwavering.
The Journey Begins : Hopes, Challenges and Home Affairs
Let’s talk about those logistical nightmares. Now, organising a bunch of leaders from different African countries and getting them all to Ukraine and Russia? Phew, talk about a mammoth task! A delegation comprised of leaders from seven countries - Comoros, Congo, Egypt, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia and led by South Africa arrived in Ukraine on 16 June and headed to Russia a day later to discuss a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
The team of African leaders were immediately met with an upward battle of challenges. Flight delays, visa issues, and miscommunication decided to join the party and add to the chaos. Leaving our delegation feeling as lost as a tourist in Soweto. It was a whirlwind of chaos, frustration, and a whole lot of “Can someone please tell me where Gate B32 is?!”
African States' (Chaotic) Commitment to International Order:
The peace mission not only underscores Africa's stance on the centrality of the United Nations (UN) Charter but also emphasizes the importance of upholding a rules-based global order. Africa's voting record in the UN General Assembly has often faced scrutiny due to divided opinions on the conflict. By taking a proactive role in the peace mission, African states aim to reset the perception that they are disinterested or irresponsible stakeholders in maintaining global stability.
One notable achievement of the peace mission was the successful engagement with both Ukraine and Russia. This dual approach is a feat that few international actors have accomplished. Although details of the mission were not initially publicized, South Africa's President Cyril Ramaphosa outlined a 10-step peace plan. The proposal emphasized territorial sovereignty, de-escalation, and security guarantees for all parties involved.
World Leaders left Tough Tied
Our African leaders felt like fish out of water in Ukraine and Russia. Trying to bridge gaps and foster understanding was no walk in the park when you got cultural differences and language limitations in the mix. Misunderstandings were flying left and right, making the whole negotiation process feel like a game of Chinese whispers.
As if that wasn't enough, our leaders had to tackle those good ol' trust issues. Both the warring parties and the international community were suspicious of our African delegation. They were like, "Who do these fellas think they are, coming from far away, thinking they can fix our problems?". Questions arose regarding the planning and conception of the mission. The logistical issues surrounding President Ramaphosa's security detail and conflicting statements regarding the threat posed by Russian missiles further raised concerns about the mission's independence and credibility.

The media circus that followed the African Peace Mission made headlines all around the world for days. The media and the public were all over them like a pack of wild dogs on fresh meat. Every move, every decision was picked apart and criticized. Talk about pressure! Our poor African leaders had to be as cautious as a cat on thin ice, trying not to slip up and make matters worse.
Round 1... Peace!
The first round of talks between Ukraine and Russia yielded mixed results, with both parties rejecting the African peace plan as unworkable. The conflict's complexities make a peaceful resolution challenging, as Ukraine insists on the withdrawal of Russian forces from its sovereign territories. Russia, on the other hand, has solidified its position through constitutional amendments reflecting its occupation of Ukrainian provinces. The ongoing conflict will continue to impact Africa, particularly in terms of food security, as agricultural infrastructure is damaged, and threats to grain exports arise.
Africa's Stance and Future Engagements:
Despite the unfortunate turn of events, the African Peace Mission did learn a thing or two. They realized the importance of better preparation and coordination for future peace missions. Dealing with those logistical nightmares ahead of time and setting up efficient communication channels can save us from chasing our own tails.
