African and European research partnership

In a groundbreaking move, universities across Africa and Europe have joined forces to create 20 new research partnerships.

This marks the largest research collaboration ever established with African universities.

The partnership brings together the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) and The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities (The Guild).

What makes this special?

Unlike typical international agreements between countries, these partnerships connect universities directly.

Supporting the Africa-EU Vision

This initiative supports the broader partnership between the African Union and European Union.

In February 2022, both unions signed an important agreement called 'A Joint Vision for 2030' at their sixth summit. The agreement includes:

- A massive €150 billion investment package

- Plans for sustainable development

- Focus on green and digital growth

- Support for education, health, and infrastructure

Why this matters:

These research partnerships (called Clusters of Research Excellence or CoREs) will help:

- Build stronger ties between African and European researchers

- Support Africa's growth and development

- Create solutions for challenges in health, education, and the environment

- Drive innovation across both continents.

This collaboration represents a major step forward in connecting African and European universities, opening new doors for shared research and innovation.

To your research aspirations,
