Africa left behind in Covid vaccination

More than a year into the pandemic, 1.3 billion Africans are still struggling sourcing the covid vaccines to protect their citizens and their economies. Africa vaccinated less than 2% of its entire population. Nigeria, the most populous nation in Africa, has vaccinated less than 0.1%. Many countries in Africa, amongst which Chad, Tanzania, Burundi and Eritrea have yet to receive any vaccines.

To date, North America administered 74 doses of vaccines per 100 people, while Europe administered 71 doses and Africa, 3.9 doses per 100 people. The export ban in India from which most African countries were sources, through Covax, has aggravated the healthcare situation in the continent additional to putting hundred of millions of people out of any social or economic activity. Recently, the World Health Organization and the World Bank have warned that coronavirus vaccinations in Africa?could come to a complete halt.

It is through action and building vaccines manufacturing capabilities in Africa that we can help build a sustainable viable future for the continent. Not through donations. Donations will fix the short term only. Africa has to be capable to take care of the healthcare basics and threats of its own citizens.

The so-called developed countries only go to Africa to establish democracy or in reality to steal all of the elements constituting the Mendeleiev periodic table. This crisis will push, I hope, the African countries to take their destinies in hand and the people to push aside their corrupt leaders.
